PERSONAL DEVELOPEMENT LESSON OBJECTIVES 1. Interpret the concepts of mental health and psychological well-being in everyday observations about mental health problems during adolescence. 2. Identify his /her own vulnerabilities. 3. Make a mind map on ways of achieving psychological well- being. WHAT IS A MENTAL HEALTH? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. MENTAL HEALTH Significantly contributes to a person’s health development. Associated with this are the ff.: Feeling happy and positive about yourself, thus, enjoying life Cultivating healthy relationships with family and friends Engaging actively in physical activities and following a healthy diet EARLY WARNING SIGNS EARLY WARNING SIGNS Eating or sleeping too much or too little Pulling away from people and usual activities Having low or no energy Feeling numb or like nothing matters having unexplained aches and pains Feeling helpless or hopeless Smoking, drinking or using drugs more than usual EARLY WARNING SIGNS Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared. Yelling or fighting with family and friends Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships having persistent thoughts and memories you can’t get out of your head EARLY WARNING SIGNS Hearing voices or believing things that are not true Thinking of harming yourself or others Inability to perform daily task like taking care of your kids or getting to work or school. Common Mental Disorder among Adolescents ADHD/Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder A persistent inattention and/or hyperactivity impulsive that disrupts normal functioning or development and whose symptoms present themselves in two or more settings such as home, ADHD/Attention school, or work. ADHD has direct negative impact on Deficit-Hyperactivity social, academic, or occupational functioning. An Disorder individual who is diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active. Bipolar Disorder Considered a serious mental illness. People who are ADHD/Attention diagnosed with this mental illness, usually go through Deficit-Hyperactivity with unusual mood changes and extremes of Disorder emotions. Generalized Anxiety Disorder Refers to excessive anxiety and worrying with ADHD/Attention difficulty to control oneself. This is associated Deficit-Hyperactivity with other symptoms such as restlessness, being Disorder easily tired, difficulty in concentrating or mind going blank Social Anxiety Disorder Having a persistent fear of socializing with ADHD/Attention unfamiliar situations or people and the fear to Deficit-Hyperactivity act in ways that may be embarrassing and Disorder humiliating Psychotic disorder Affect brain function by altering thoughts, beliefs or perceptions. People with a psychotic ADHD/Attention disorder may be convinced that Deficit-Hyperactivity someone is spying on them or following them, may hear Disorder voices or have the feeling that others are manipulating their thoughts. Eating disorder ADHD/Attention Viewed as lifestyle-related disorder.
