# The Intricate Art of Papercutting in Luzon ### Valuing - Empathy - Pride ### Key Words - Line - Shape - Color - Texture - Space - Form - Balance - Proportion - Value **Observe the intricate and unique artworks placed in a frame.** ## I Learn In drawing, painting, printmaking, or sculpture making, the elements of art are the core or basic foundation to produce a composition. Let us name and define each element. ### Line A line is an essential tool and element of art. It is the distance between two points. It can be straight or curved, thick or thin, short or long, and static or moving. It is used to create movements, rhythms, and patterns. There are two kinds of lines: straight and curved lines. Straight lines can be vertical, diagonal, horizontal, jagged or zigzag, broken, intersecting, or parallel. These can form geometrical shapes such as squares or triangles. On the other hand, curved lines such as spiral, wavy, concave, and convex lines are essential tools for creating free form or organic shapes. ### Shape and Form Shape is formed when lines are put together to enclose a space. It is a two-dimensional object, and it can be formed into various patterns and motifs. On the other hand, form is a three-dimensional object. It has top, bottom, front, back, left, and right views. There are two types of shapes: organic and geometric. **Organic shapes** are forms that can be seen in nature such as flowers, rocks, fruits, sea creatures, stars, and many more. These shapes show movement and life. On the other hand, **geometric shapes** are made up of sharp, still, and lifeless lines. Some examples include triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles. ### Color Color is an interesting, attractive, and exciting part of an artwork. It gives life, meaning, and value to an artwork. Thus, it makes an artwork look real. Color is composed of three groups-primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. - **Primary colors** are the sources of all colors. These are red, blue, and yellow. - **Secondary colors** are two primary colors that are combined. - **Tertiary colors** are the combination of one primary and one secondary color. When these groups of colors are put together, we form a color wheel. ### Value Value is formed when black or white is mixed with color. The value range shows the transition of colors from light to dark. ### Texture Texture refers to the smoothness or roughness and softness or hardness of an object. There are two kinds of texture, physical or tactile texture and visual texture. - **Physical texture** involves the sense of touch. We touch and feel an object to know its texture. On the other hand, when we use our sense of sight and try to figure out the texture of an object, we are finding out its visual texture. ### Space Space refers to the empty area around an artwork. ### Balance Balance is the arrangement of elements in a work of art. This can be achieved through symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial arrangements. - **Symmetrical balance** occurs when one side is the mirror image of the other side. - **Asymmetrical balance** occurs when two sides may not be exactly the same but they try to create balance. For instance, one side is a large circle but on the other side it is composed of small square. - **Radial balance** is when the elements equally converge around the central point. ### Proportion Proportion is about making sure that all parts or piece of art are the right size for each other and it looks balanced to achieve a pleasing art composition. ### Scale Scale pertains to the size of a thing in relation to the other objects in a design or piece of art. When Luz Ocampo started making her intricate papercutting, she considered all of these elements of art and principles of design in making a pleasing, presentable, and unique design.
