DISTINCTION COLLEGE EVENTS PLANNING What is Event Management? Event management is the process of effectively planning and coordinating an event such as a wedding, corporate function, cocktail party, gala, birthday party , graduation, or soiree. Planning and coordination are two of the most important aspects of event management and the event planner must have the skills and ability to be an effective event planner and coordinator. The Event Planners are often people who got their start in one aspect of special events such as floral design, cake decorating or even catering. This explains why planners often not only coordinate entire events but may, in addition, provide one or more services for those events. Event planners may also have started out planning events for other event companies before deciding to go into business for themselves. Event management requires strong organizational, budgeting, and creative skills. Those who work in event management must also be comfortable with interacting with various types of individuals. Having a pleasant and friendly personality are quite necessary for this career path because you must have the ability to interact and communicate well with your clients, vendors/ suppliers, workers, and other persons in various social settings Topic: Operate in a Culturally Diverse Work Environment Cultural awareness is a requirement that all workers in the tourism and hospitality industries are required to have to effectively communicate and deal with customers from Diverse Background. Cuisine Ackee and saltfish Fried breadfruit Curry goat Jerk chicken Jamaican beef patty Bammy Escovitch fish Mannish water Clothing Traditional Jamaican clothing includes the bandana skirt and head scarf, the ruffled skirt and blouse, and the dashiki. The colors and patterns used in these styles are a mix of African and European influences, and they often incorporate elements related to Jamaica's history and culture. Religion Religion and faith are intertwined in Jamaican culture, and our island is home to multiple denominations; Roman Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, , Pentecostal, Seventh Day Adventist, and Methodist are just a few to be found here. People OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE ETHNIC GROUPS IN JAMAICA Ethnic groups contributing to Jamaica's mixed heritage come from a wide range including, but not limited to, the Taino Amerindians who first lived on the island, West Africans, East Indians, English, Spanish, French, Chinese, other Asians, and Arabs. What is Cultural Diversity? “valuing the differences between people and the ways in which those differences can contribute to a richer, more creative and more productive environment.” It’s not just about race (which is usually foremost in people’s minds) – Government in the contemporary world has identified six strands of diversity – race, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and religious/belief. What is Cultural Awareness? Cultural Awareness is the foundation of communication, and it involves the ability of standing back from ourselves and becoming aware of our cultural values, beliefs, and perceptions. Why do we do things in that way? How do we see the world? Why do we react in that way? Cultural awareness we must interact with people from other cultures. People see, interpret, and evaluate things in a different way. Examples: The British, The Americans, The Asians THE END
