Students will be able to identify and describe the parts and functions of a compound microscope Core Concepts Cell Theory What Is a Cell Who are the Postulates of Cell theory Biology 1 Defining Biology WHAT IS BIOLOGY? Biology 1 Biology 1 Francesco Redi's Experiment (1668): Redi, an Italian physician, conducted an experiment using jars to disprove the theory of spontaneous generation. Biology 1  Lazzaro Spallanzani (1765): Spallanzani boiled nutrient broths and sealed them in flasks. No microorganisms grew in the sealed flasks, suggesting that microorganisms did not spontaneously generate but rather came from the air.  Hans and Zacharias Janssen (1590) Dutch spectacle makers credited with creating the first compound microscope. Their device used multiple lenses to magnify objects.  Robert Hooke (1665) Published "Micrographia," where he documented his observations using a microscope. Coined the term "cell" after observing cork tissue. “Micrographia," is a landmark publication that showcased the power of the microscope, introduced the concept of the cell, and contributed significantly to the advancement of biological sciences.  Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1670s) Developed simple microscopes with high-quality lenses. Discovered microorganisms, which he referred to as "animalcules."  Modern Microscopy (20th Century - Present) Electron Microscopes (1930s) Ernst Ruska developed the first electron microscope.
