Pharmacy Orientation Lecture (2) Dr. Ahmed Y. Kira Lecturer of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology Lecture (2) This lecture focuses on 1 2 3 Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences The Basic courses of pharmacy education: Analytical chemistry Pharmacognosy Pharmaceutical Chemistry Medicinal chemistry Organic chemistry Pharmacology Pharmaceutics Microbiology Biochemistry Clinical Pharmacy Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences 1) Pharmacognosy A science that focuses on the study of natural products derived from plants, including their sources, characteristics, identification, and clinical effectiveness. Examples: Digitalis: Extracted from the foxglove plant, digitalis is used to treat heart conditions. Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences 2) Pharmacology Deals with drug action mechanisms, determining its possible biologic activity and drug-drug interaction, and classifying drugs according to their therapeutic activity. Toxicology: is a branch of pharmacology science deals with toxicological effect of drugs and other agents Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences 3) Pharmaceutical Chemistry a) Analytical chemistry: deals with the analysis of drug products, their purity and composition. b) Organic chemistry: deals with the chemical structure, nomenclature and synthesis of chemical compounds. c) Medicinal chemistry: deals with the relationship of chemical structure to pharmacologic activity. Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences 4) Biochemistry Deals with the biological importance of agents found in diet and the body. It focuses on understanding structures and functions of biological molecules within cells. Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences 5) Microbiology Microbiology is the study of microscopic living organisms like bacteria, viruses, and parasites, including their structures, actions, infections, antimicrobials, and immunology. Public health, a branch of microbiology focuses on measures to protect and enhance the health of communities. Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences 6) Pharmaceutics Pharmaceutics is the branch of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences that concerns the design, development, formulation, and delivery of pharmaceutical medications to optimize their safety, effectiveness, and patient use. Pharmaceutics is contributing significantly to the overall success of pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences 7) Clinical Pharmacy An area of pharmacy where pharmacists is patient rather than drug product oriented. It focus on the provision of pharmaceutical care by pharmacists to optimize medication therapy for individual patients, with a strong importance on patient monitoring, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
