Teaching strategies Teaching strategies refer to methods used to help students learn the desired course contents and be able to develop achievable goals in the future. Teaching strategies Assessment of the learning capabilities of students provides a key pillar in development of a successful teaching strategy. Teaching Strategies Effective strategies support your goals Teaching Methods A teaching method comprises the principles and methods used for instruction. Some Types of Teaching Methods Lecture Group Discussion One-to-one instruction Demonstration& return demonstration Simulation Role Play Role Modeling Remote learning Gamming Lecture Lecture can be defined as a highly structured methods by which the teacher verbally transmits information directly to groups of learners for the purpose of instruction. It is one of the oldest and most often used approaches to teaching. Advantage 1. *An efficient and cost-effective means for transmitting large amounts of information to a large number of people at the same time and within a relatively reasonable time frame. 2. Useful to demonstrate patterns, highlight main ideas, summarize data, and present unique ways of viewing information. 3. *Effective approach for cognitive domain only. 4. Easily supplemented with handout materials and other audiovisual aids to enhance learning. Limitation 1. Ineffective in affective and psychomotor behavior. 2. Does not provide for stimulation or participatory involvement of learners. 3. *Very instructor centered. 4. *Does not depend on individual difference in background and attention span. Group Discussion Group discussion can be defined as a method of teaching whereby learners get together to exchange information, feelings and opinions with one another and with the teacher. Advantage 1. Enhance learning in both the affective and cognitive domains. 2. *Is both learner centered and subject centered. 3. *Stimulates learner to think about issues and problems. 4. *Encourage members to exchange their own experiences and ideas so learner more active and less isolating. 5. Foster positive peer support and feeling of belonging. Limitation 1. *Easy to digress from the topic, which interferes with achievement of the objectives. 2. *Requires skills to redirect learners who digress from the topic. 3. More time consuming for transmission of information than lecture. One –to- Ine Instruction One-to-One Instruction Involves delivering information specially designed to meet the needs of an individual learner. Advantage 1. *The content of teaching can be meet individual needs. 2. *Good for teaching behavior in all three domains of learning. 3. Provides opportunity for immediate feedback to be shared between the teacher and learner. Limitation 1. *The learner is isolated from others who have similar needs or concerns. 2. Deprives learners the opportunity to identify with others and share information, idea, and feelings. 3. Questioning may be interpreted by the learner. 4. *The learner may feel overloaded and anxious if the educator give too much information each session. Demonstration Demonstration is done by the teacher to show the learner how to perform a particular skill. Advantage 1. *Effective for learning in the psychomotor domain. 2. Actively engages the learner through stimulation of visual, auditory, and tactile senses. 3. *Repetition of movement increase confidence, competence and skill retention. Limitation 1. Require plenty of time. 2. *Size of audience must be kept small to ensure opportunity for practice and supervision. 3. Equipment can be expensive. 4. *Extra space and equipment is needed for practicing certain skills. Simulation Simulation/ Role Modeling is a method whereby an artificial experience that engages the learner in an activity that reflects real-life conditions but without the risk-taking consequences of an actual situation is created. Advantage 1. Excellent for psychomotor domain (skill development). 2. Enhance higher level problem-solving and interactive abilities in the cognitive and affective domains. 3. *Provide for active learner involvement in areal-life situation. 4. *Provide a safe nonthreatening environment for learning. Limitation 1. *Can be expensive. 2. *Not readily available to all learners. 3. Require adequate preparation. 4. *Time Consuming. Role Play Learners actively participate in an unrehearsed dramatization Learners play an assigned character as they think the character would realistically act Advantages 1. *Provides opportunity to explore feelings and attitudes 2. Can help bridge the gap between understanding and feeling 3. Narrows the role distance between and among patients and professionals Limitations 1. Limited to small groups 2. *Tendency to overly exaggerate roles 3. May cause feelings of discomfort Role Model Role model: Someone whom others look to as an example of behavior and/or success to be imitated Primarily used to achieve behavior change in the affective domain Advantages 1. *Can implant socially desired behaviors 2. Enhances critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and professional identity 3. Helps bridge the gap between theory and practice Limitations 1. Requires rapport between the role model and learner 2. *Can implant unacceptable behaviors 3. Can result in role conflict Remote Learning Any learning that takes place across distance (not in a campus classroom) with instruction and learning materials accessible electronically Primarily effective for cognitive learning Uses different types of technology Advantages 1. Can link to multiple resources 2. *Encourages independent and active learning 3. *Increases accessibility for nontraditional students 4. Enhances critical thinking and decision making Limitations 1. *Decentralized; can make learners feel isolated 2. Requires computer access and good Internet connection 3. Limited infrastructure in some locations Gaming Requires the learner to participate in a competitive activity with preset rules Form of active learning Advantages 1. Primarily for improving cognitive function 2. Increased retention 3. *Add variety to the learning experience Limitations 1. Too competitive for some learners 2. Requires small group for participation by all 3. *Potentially higher noise level 4. *May not be possible for learners with some disabilities Activity Zone: Matching teaching Statement methods Type of teaching methods Learners get together to exchange information, feelings and opinions A. Technology in Education The World Wide Web and Internet Mobile Technologies Social Media Webcasts and Web Conferencing E-Mail and Texting The World Wide Web and Internet World Wide Web Virtual space for information *Network of information servers around the world that are connected to the internet Created to display information Internet Global network of computers *Allow the transfer of information from one computer to another Created to exchange information Mobile Technologies Classroom uses 1. *Interactive 2. Location awareness 3. Collaboration Advantages 1. *Familiar for many students 2. Provide immediate feedback Limitations: *Ethical concerns Social Media Uses 1. Networking 2. Education 3. Support Student benefits 1. *Peer-to-peer support 2. Engagement with experts and the public 3. Ability to summarize understanding of information 4. Skill development in critical thinking 5. *Sharing of ideas Common forms of social media 1. Wikis 2. Facebook 3. Twitter 4. LinkedIn 5. YouTube Webcasts and Web Conferencing Webcasts ✔Live broadcasts over the Internet ✔Can share audio and/or video ✔*Can share with participants in multiple locations at once ✔Growing in popularity as a training device Web conferencing ✔*Also called webinars ✔Web-based conferencing that allows for real-time interaction ✔Can be an effective teaching strategy Guidelines for Webcasts 1. *Allow adequate time to publicize the event. 2. *Develop a lesson plan or meeting agenda in advance. 3. Ensure adequate staffing is available for the webinar. 4. Send instructions and materials to participants several days in advance. Guidelines for Web Conferences 1. *Start early. 2. *Reduce background noise. 3. Keep the conversation moving. 4. Follow up with participants after the session. E-Mail and Texting 1. Increased interest from patients for this type of communication 2. Offers many potential benefits a) *Easy to use b) May encourage patients to ask follow-up questions c) Simple way to check in on patients d) *Provides a written record of the nurse’s response Activity Zone: Matching technological methods in education Statement Type of teaching methods 1- Interactive methods in the classroom A.
