# GNED 06 Lecture 5 ## Science Education in the Philippines ### Department of Biological Sciences College of Arts and Sciences Cavite State University - Science subjects taught are delivered through a systematic process using pedagogies. ### Pedagogy - Study of teaching and how content is presented and delivered to a learner. - Includes theory and practice, employing strategies, specific interaction, instructive content, combined goals of the learner and teacher, and how the content is presented and delivered. - Using pedagogical theories and models helps instructors and students to teach and learn scientific concepts and processes effectively. ## The Philippine Science Education System ### Department of Education (DepEd) - School curricula and school programs for elementary and high school levels. ### Commission on Higher Education (CHED) - Established under R.A. 7722 in 1994. - System of higher education. - Development of public and private higher/tertiary education. ### Science Education - Starts during basic education and is still present during college. - It is intertwined with technology and industry. - Enhances questioning skills, values, and attitudes, and critical thinking skills. - Basic education program prepares the students for a higher level of learning. ## The K-12 Program - Elementary and secondary schools under the K-12 program. - Develop learners to make judgments and apply what they have learned. - The importance of science and technology to everyday living. - Reperetoire of competencies important in the world of work and a knowledge-based society. ## Philippine Science High School - Some offer both regular and science curricula, while others offer science curricula only. - More advanced science and mathematics subjects. - **DOST:** Supervising curriculum for Philippine Science High School. - **DepEd:** Supervising S&T-oriented schools. - Regarded as the top high school in the Philippines. - The best in the ASEAN region in 2016. - **16 Campuses:** - **Luzon**: 8 Campuses - **Visayas**: 3 campuses - **Mindanao**: 5 campuses ## Science Education in the Tertiary Level - **General education curriculum**: Developing understanding and appreciation of scientific ideas and works. - **Tertiary education**: - Applying some fundamental concepts or theories. - How to integrate these concepts and create your own basic research. - Preparation of science teachers, scientists, engineers, and other professionals. ## Problems in the Science Education System - Teaching science is very challenging. - The ratio of students to teachers and the ration of students to the classroom. - Only one laboratory room out of 10 public elementary schools. - Other public elementary schools do not even have one. - Lack of science education facilities: Negative effect on performance. - Teacher qualification and preparedness: Only a small fraction of teachers are qualified to teach different science subjects. - Building of laboratory rooms and purchase of teaching materials: Helps remedy the present situation. - Scholarships and few projects: Needs to be expanded to have a strong pool of science experts. ## Thank you ### Department of Biological Sciences College of Arts and Sciences Cavite State University
