This course assumes you already... ¡ Understand basic research methodology ¡ Have some background in clinical psychology (knowledge about assessment, diagnosis, treatment) COURSE MATERIALS ¡ Other readings will be posted on D2L ¡ First reading: Ch. 1 – Addiction Defined ACCOMMODATIONS & ACCESSIBILITY NEEDS ¡ Students permitted to request academic accommodations through the Student Accessibility Centre ¡ I will work with you to provide reasonable accommodations to meet your needs ¡ Please provide your accommodations form for my signature + an extra copy for my records ATTENDANCE ¡ Stay home if you have COVID or cold/flu symptoms. ¡ Get notes from a classmate. ¡ If you miss a quiz, it will be the one that is dropped. Don’t miss more than one quiz- if you anticipate missing more than one quiz, please talk to me about it in advance. QUIZZES & STUDY GUIDES ¡ There will be 3 quizzes; your best two of three will be worth 10% each, and the lowest one will be dropped. ¡ If you must miss a quiz, that quiz will be dropped from your grade. I will not drop more than one quiz from anyone’s grade. ¡ Study guides will be distributed 2 days before the Study Guide days ¡ Complete the study guides independently; then, you will come to class and discuss ¡ You will submit a revised study grade; you will be graded whether you made the effort to answer the questions, and whether you modified your responses based on your discussion with classmates. FINAL EXAM (30%) ¡ Cumulative ¡ Similar structure to quizzes ¡ Will take place during final exam period (Dec. 10-20) ¡ There will also be a study guide day for the final exam HOW TO SUCCEED ON QUIZZES & FINAL EXAM ¡ Do the readings & take notes ¡ Summarize, consider, evaluate ¡ Spend time preparing your study guide ¡ Try to answer the questions from memory before consulting readings/lecture notes ¡ Participate in class discussions & study guide days ¡ Participation is not graded, but this is an opportunity to practice engaging with the material & your peers ¡ You will learn more if you attend & pay attention during lectures CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS PAPER (30%) ¡ Prepare early: start thinking about your topics now. Area of addictions + aspect of culture that interests you? ¡ Culture includes age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, education, family structure, beliefs, geographic location, language, country of origin… ¡ Length & Format: 3-4 pages (12 pt font, double-spaced, not including the title page and references).
