Bravo RCE, MEng Reference Books Principles of Engineering management By Jishan He Engineering management by AJ Gupta Introduction to Engineering management University of Nairobi By Dr. N Osano What is management? Management is Getting things done through people. The process of achieving organizational goals by engaging in the 4 major functions of Management  planning & decision-making,  organizing & staffing,  directing/leading, and  controlling. INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT Chinese proverb “If you are planning for one year – plant rice. If you are planning for ten years – plant trees. But if you are planning for 100 years – plant people!” What is Management? The process of designing and maintaining an environment in which, individuals, working together in groups, efficiently accomplish organizational goals/objectives Also in Business /manufacturing , Managing is concerned with productivity!!! Concerned with efficiency in producing goods and services JRMSU Goals G – lobally competitive education institution; R – esilient to internal and external risks and hazards; I – nnovative processes and solutions in research translated to extension engagements; P – artnerships and collaborations with private enterprise, other HEIs, government agencies, and alumni; S – ound Fiscal management and participatory governance. On Management by Steve Jobs Management is about persuading people to do things they do not want to do……, Steve Jobs Is it Leadership or Management? How is Leadership is Different from Management? 1. Process vs. Vision Effective leadership is centered on a vision to guide change. (ex. Bagong Lipunan/Marcos/ Philippines 2000 (Ramos) managers set out to achieve organizational goals through implementing processes, such as budgeting, organizational structuring, and staffing, leaders are more intent on thinking ahead and capitalizing on opportunities..” 2. Organizing vs. Aligning The manager administers; the leader innovates The manager maintains; the leader develops The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people 3. Position vs. Quality The title “manager” often denotes a specific role within an organization’s hierarchy, “ Manager is a title. It’s a role and set of responsibilities,”. Leadership is the result of action. If you act in a way that inspires, encourages, or engages others, you are a leader. A leader may not have a title of a Manager And A Manager may NOT be a LEADER!. BUT The best managers are also TRUE leaders, but the two are not synonymous. Steve Jobs said Management is about persuading people to do things they do not want to do…., while leadership is about inspiring people to do things they never thought they could. Steve Jobs Engineering Management is a specialized form of management concerned with the application in engineering, as a result of the unique personalities (engineers, manufacturers , scientists, contractors, entrepreneurs etc )and technical nature of engineering. Example areas of engineering management product development, manufacturing, construction , design engineering, industrial engineering, technology, production, The (6) Functions of Management Functions of Management 1 Planning & Decision-Making – Involves selecting goals and objectives, as well as the actions to achieve them; it requires decision-making, choosing the “best” from among alternatives. 2 Organizing – roles for people to fill in an organization. – allocating and arranging human and non-human resources so that plans can be carried out successfully 3 Staffing – Process by which managers select, train, promotes, and retires subordinate – Involves filling, and keeping filled, the positions in the organization structure. 4 Directing/Leading – Influencing people so that they will contribute to organizational and group goals. 5.Controlling – Measuring and correcting individual and organizational performance to ensure that events conform to plans/ organizational standards. About Control and Power “Power is Nothing without CONTROL” Carl Lewis Olympic athlete Multi Olympic Gold Medalis Time Spent in Carrying out Management functions The 3 Managerial levels 1 Strategic Managers who are ultimately responsible for the entire organization. Typical titles include CEO, “President”, “Executive Vice President”, “Executive Director”, “Senior Vice President”, or “Vice President”. Tactical Managers 2 Tactical Managers located beneath the top levels of the hierarchy who are directly responsible for the work of managers at lower levels. Titles include “ Manager”, “Director of”, “Chief”, “Department Head”, and “Division Head”. 3 Operational Managers at the lowest level of the hierarchy who are directly responsible for the work of operating (nonmanagerial) employees. Often have titles that include the word “Supervisor The 3 Managerial Levels Required Managerial Skills 1 Conceptual Skill - The cognitive ability to see the organization as a whole and the relationships among its parts. 2 Human Skill The ability to work with and through other people and to work effectively as a group member. 3 Technical Skill The understanding of and proficiency in the performance of specific tasks Managerial skills Qualities of Excellent managers 1 Integrity “living it myself before leading others” 2 Good communicator acquire the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing 3 Flexible multi-tasker, imaginative and innovative 4 committed -willing to do whatever it takes attain organizational success Qualities of Excellent managers 5 People-oriented knows that people’s feelings are important 6 gratitude “give credit where it is due” 7 focused- try to see the “big picture” within the forest Some Important Management Terms: Productivity is an index that measures output (goods and services) relative to the input (labor, materials, energy, and other resources) Output vs input Some Important Management Terms Effectiveness means the capability of producing an effect. (doing the "right" things) even if it takes a bit longer. It’s the strategic vision behind innovation trends, where you’re not just running fast but also in the right direction. Example of effectiveness For maximum effectiveness of your weight loss plan, you need to combine exercise with a healthy diet. Example of Effectiveness An effective person or company is the person who meets the objectives set or proposed by the company Example of effectiveness innovation Example: Let’s talk about electric cars. They weren’t the most efficient vehicles at first, but they were effective in moving us towards a more sustainable future. It’s like choosing a salad over a donut — might not be the quickest path to satisfaction, but it’s the right one in the long run. EFFECIENCY assesses the ability to achieve the goal set using the minimum resources needed. These Fundamental resources are: Time Resources Cost. It is the ability to achieve it with the minimum possible allocation of resources Effeciency Efficiency is a measure of how well a certain aspect is performing. (doing the things “right”) accomplish something with the least waste of time and effort; Example from Life: on Effeciency Ever tried to impress someone with your cooking, so you efficiently prep and cook a meal in record time,!!! only to realize you made something they’re allergic to? Efficient? Yes. Effective? Not so much. end
