Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) spatial language basics “Aspects of Perception Equilibrium in Interior Design” Under supervision : Prof. Maha El Halaby L.A: Hala Hassan Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) Prof. Maha El Halaby spatial language basics L.A: Hala Hassan (Aspects of Perception Equilibrium in Interior Design) First, the recipient perceives the interior design of the interior spaces as a whole, then he tries to analyze its parts and link them with relationships with each other. After this is done through a final overall view, the person has completed comprehending the features of the shape of the particular interior space. The aspects of perception of balance in interior design can be divided into: 1 - (Equilibrium and Perception of Shapes and Units in Interior Design) Perceiving balance in the form of an interior design of a space depends on the extent of identifying its components, characteristics, and classification. For example, perceiving simple shapes is easier than perceiving complex or free shapes, and to the extent of the shape’s influence on what surrounds it, as we explain below: Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) Prof. Maha El Halaby spatial language basics L.A: Hala Hassan A -The relationship between the shape and the background: A person needs to perceive any object to distinguish it from its background, whether it is furniture, interior walls, or other things. In the event that the background contrasts with the furniture unit in the emerging design, the features of this unit stand out and become clear, and thus it becomes easier for the viewer to perceive it. This contrast between them may be achieved by different colors, materials, textures, design lines, etc....and the perception of shapes in general and furniture pieces and space accessories in particular depends on the extent of the designer's success in choosing the background and achieving balance between them. -PictuRE balance in which the perception and distinction between the furniture units, walls and backgrounds is evident, and this distinction is highlighted through the use of colours. The simpler the boundaries are, the easier it is to perceive the visual form. However, if the original boundaries of the units are obscured in space due to their weak effect on the background, the more difficult it is for the mind to perceive their shapes, and thus achieve the required balance. Since perception and balance carry a reciprocal relationship between them. -Image No )6-3-1 (.shows the contrasting colours between the shapes and blocks in space, as we find a clear contrast between them and the external borders of the blocks, which makes it easy for the viewer to perceive the blocks and their borders in space. To perceive these specific shapes of the units contained in the internal space, the mind usually first interprets and analyzes the complex shapes into their original simple components, and then assembles them again to form the complex shape in its imagination. In the early twentieth century, a group of German psychologists were interested in studying how the mind analyzes what it sees individually, and they developed what is called “Gestalt theories. ” Explaining the process of perception. The essential idea presented by the Gestalt theory is that “the whole is different from the sum of the parts ”or “it is not just a collection of parts. ”The square is not just four sides, and thus the Gestalt theory is the overall formula through which these four sides are organized to take on the characteristic of the square. Therefore, the Gestalt theory sees that there is a group of formative laws that affect how shapes are perceived, including: the law of proximity - the law of similarity - the law of closure - the law of continuity - the law of simple and large shapes. Or ( good luck) This is the method that the mind uses to test the balance of any specific spatial formation or distribution of some lines , Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) Prof. Maha El Halaby spatial language basics L.A: Hala Hassan -Image b dengised )7Frank Gehry - (Lou Ruvo Center For Brain Health) An internal space for one of the medical centers, and the perception of balance between the masses is achieved according to the Gestalt theory. And trying to create a design that aims for the service factor to play a major role in presenting it. The interior designer must take into account several aspects in addition to the factor of dazzle and attraction, including: A- Shape of the space : The shape and space of the space in interior design are determined by a set of surfaces and directions. Usually, the recipient can visually perceive the shape of the usual space, such as the rectangle, square, circle, etc., even if not all the surfaces of this space are physically complete. Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) Prof. Maha El Halaby spatial language basics L.A: Hala Hassan Figure Visual perception of incomplete spaces, as the viewer's eye tends to complete the incomplete geometric shape and complete it with the closest geometric shape stored in memory. Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) Prof. Maha El Halaby spatial language basics L.A: Hala Hassan B- Dimensions (height and depth) of the space : Balance is achieved as a result of the psychological relationship between the dimensions of the space and its user through his awareness of the depth of the internal space used. The process of perceiving depth is considered one of the most advanced cognitive processes because it is not just a perception of the third dimension, but rather it goes beyond this to the point of perceiving perspective in terms of the contradiction in dimensions the greater the distance between the body and the viewer and the difference in the perception of close angles, as well as the parallelism of the foreground objects to the background, and the convergence of parallel lines at one point the greater the depth and other rules of perspective. - Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) Prof. Maha El Halaby spatial language basics L.A: Hala Hassan -Image in which the depth of the space is perceived, as the user of the space can sense the spaciousness as a result of his perception of the height of the space resulting from the design of the internal stairs in a spiral shape, which increases the sense of depth. Colors have a psychological effect on the viewer, which brings him to a state of initial balance. It is the first phenomenon that appears to us and calls our attention when we look at any element of space. Each color has a color value. For example, if you place two equal areas of gray on a light background, let it be white, and the other on a dark background, let it be black, as in Figure-3-1( , )4the first area will appear lighter to the eye than the second. This means that if white is next to another color, it increases its value, and if black is next to another color, it decreases its value Helwan National University Lecture 3 2024/2025 Environmental interior design (EID) Prof. Maha El Halaby spatial language basics L.A: Hala Hassan If a colour is surrounded by another colour, this surrounding colour affects the essence of the surrounded colour because it merges visually after seeing the image with the surrounding colour, which differs in essence (the origin of the colour). )shows the perception of the color red against a background of blue and purple. Use complementary colors on the color wheel as they have a natural balance. Care for the color gradation in terms of value, intensity and tone. Using a spot of a hot color in a neutral interior space will achieve a calm, balanced sense of positivity, while balancing the fiery, tense, and energetic feeling. -Image )1shows the extent of the effect of the red color in attracting the viewer’s eye and creating a feeling of vitality and bustle in the space with the use of a neutral background. This is done by the designer achieving balance through the equivalence between his design of the space and the experiences and cultures of the user of the space, which will carry the intended meaning for him.
