Magnetic separation Lec 9 Design Principles: In the design of any type of magnetic separators, therefore besides a field a gradient in the field strength has to be provided to enhance movement of particles in the desired directions. Two other parameters for evaluating magnetic separators are the energy consumption per tonne of material treated and the mass per tonne of a machine. Commercial magnetic separators are continuous- process machines and operation is carried out on a moving stream of particles passing into and through the magnetic field. Close control of the speed of passage of the particles through the field is essential, which rules out free fall as a means of feeding. Belts or drums are very often used to transport the feed through the field. The magnetic field may be generated by one of the several ways as 1) permanent magnet(‫)ثابت‬ 2) Electromagnet with iron yoke (‫)مقرن لفائف المغنطة‬ 3) Solenoid )‫(ملف لولبي‬ 4) Superconducting magnet.(‫)مفرط الموصلية‬ the commercial magnetic separators are seen in many forms and names, a broad grouping can be made for these as below : a) Low Intensity b) High Intensity both could be either wet or dry operation type. By creating an environment a magnetic force (Fm), a gravitional force (Fg) and a drag force (Fd) magnetic particles can be separated from non-magnetic particles by Magnetic Separation. cm Particle size in feed - restricted by matrix type. Matrix type XR 1.1 for particles
