Introduction to Dentistry Dental Teamwork Dentistry is a highly skilled, technical and sometimes stressful profession, where people’s health is at stake and where safety is paramount. It is important that everyone involved in the delivery of dental care is respected, valued and works effectively as part of a team. What is teamwork in dentistry? They are group of people working together to provide good- quality dental care. Dental team can take many different forms, depending on the needs of the patient. It is not just limited to dental professionals working together in the same practice. Who are the members of the dental team? Dental Teamwork Dentist Dental Auxiliaries Non operating Operating Expanded Function Dental Auxiliaries Clinical Laboratory Dentist The dentist is the head of the dental team — responsible and accountable for everything that goes on in the dental office, is licensed Doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or Doctor of medicine in dentistry (DMD) Dental Ancillaries/ Auxiliaries Dental auxiliary is a generic term for all persons who assist the dentist in treating patients. Their duties range from simple tasks such as sorting instruments to relatively complex procedures which form part of the patients treatment. A dental auxiliary or ancillary is a person who is given responsibility by a dentist so that he/she can help the dentist render dental care, but who is not qualified with a dental degree. Dental Auxiliaries Non Operating Auxiliary Operating Auxiliary Clinical Laboratory 1. Non Operating Auxiliary Clinical: a person who assists the dentist in his clinical work but does not carry out any independent procedures in the oral cavity. Laboratory: a person who assist the professional (dentist) by carrying out certain technical laboratory procedures. *Non Operating Auxiliaries Dental Secretary/ Receptionist Dental Health Educator Dental Surgery Assistant Dental Laboratory Technician Dental Secretary/ Receptionist A person who assists the dentist with in secretarial work and patient reception duties Dental Health Educator A person who instructs in the prevention of dental disease and who may also be permitted to apply preventive agents intra orally. Dental Assistant Assist the dentist or dental hygienist in treating patients, prepare and sterilize instrument, prepare materials….. Reception of the Patient Preparation of the patient for treatment Preparation and provision of all necessary facilities, such as mouthwashes, napkins. Presentation of documents Assistance with x- rays Patient instruction Mixing materials Chair- side Dental assistant Four handed dentistry Handle the dentist a particular instrument at the amount he needs it. Performs retraction or aspiration Dental Laboratory Technician A person who fabricate oral appliances as dentures, bridge work, crowns, splints or orthodontic appliances. They are called a dental mechanic A dental technician rarely works directly with patients, but receives instruction from dentists for making dental prostheses. They work in a private commercial laboratories rather than dental offices. 2. Operating Auxiliary A person who is not a professional is permitted to carry out certain treatment procedures in the mouth under the direction and supervision of a professional. *Operating Auxiliaries Dental hygienist Dental therapist School dental nurse Expanded function dental auxiliaries Dental Hygienist A. Clinical Dental Hygienist Scaling and polishing of teeth, Topical fluorides applications , Provision of dental health education Dental Hygienist B. Public Health Dental Hygienist They screen or preliminary examine patients such as school children or industrial employers Referring patients to dentist for treatment Classroom teaching. Dental Therapist This is an operating auxiliary , who is permitted to carry out the prescription of a supervising dentist, certain specified preventive and treatment measures including the preparation of cavities and restoration of teeth. They are like school dental nurse but their role is quite different, they are not permitted to diagnose and plan dental care. They are permitted to work based on the written treatment plan by the dentist. Course duration — 2 years Expanded Function Dental Auxiliaries Also known as expanded function dental hygienist, expanded function dental assistant, expanded function auxiliary, expanded duty dental auxiliary. EFDA is a dental assistant who has received further training in duties related to direct treatment of patients, though still working under the supervision of dentist. They undertake reversible procedures, which could be either corrected or redone without undue harm to patient's health. They do not prepare cavities or make decision as to pulp protection after caries has been excavated, but work under side of dentist. They do only the restorative procedures. Functions: Placing & removing rubber dams &Placing & removing temporary restorations. Placing & removing matrix bands. Placing of acrylic restorations in previously prepared teeth. Condensing & carving amalgam restorations in previously prepared teeth. Applying the final finish & polish to previously listed restorations. British Dental Association (BDA) It provides its members with legal, health and safety and educational advice as well as influencing government policy in each of the UK's four nations. British Dental Health Foundation: It aims to help people improve their oral health through a range of project activities supports dental professionals by providing information and resources for oral health education and promotion. General Dental Council: The organization which regulates dental professionals in the united kingdom. World Health Organization (WHO) It is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the united nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, Articulating evidence-based policy options Providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. World Dental Federation (FDI) One of the goals of the FDI is to develop and disseminate policies, standards and information related to all aspects of oral health care around the world. It does this through the publication of FDI policy statements; declarations that lay out the current thinking on various issues related to oral health, oral health policies and the dental profession. Food And Drug Association (FDA) Ensure the safety of america’s food supply, and to make safe, effective, and affordable medical products available to the public, whether imported or made in the USA. The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable; and helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods to improve their health. American Academy Of Pediatric Dentistry The AAPD is the membership organization representing the specialty of pediatric dentistry. Our 7,000 members serve as primary care providers for millions of children from infancy through adolescence. American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) The American academy of periodontology (AAP) is an 8,000- member association of dental professionals specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants.
