ROENTGENOLOGY -The science or study of radiation as used in medicine - a branch of medical science that deals with the use of x-rays, radioactive substances, and other forms of radiant energy in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. (Radiology is the new term) INTRODUCTION AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND PURPOSE OF DENTAL RADIOGRAPH - Only preoperative means of inspecting the hidden structures of oral cavity. QUALITIES OF DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHS 1. Proper contrast 2. Proper density 3. Maximal definition 4. Minimal distortion 5. Outline the anatomy of region under consideration DEFINITION OF RADIOGRAPHY - Art and practice of making radiographs( requires Practice, Study, Experience and Judgment) - Science which embodies Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry PRACTITIONER’S RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Produce acceptable radiographs 2. Determine errors and correct them 3. Practice correct radiation safety 4. Demonstrate knowledge of physics, chemistry, and mathematics THREE DIMENSIONAL DIGITAL IMAGING CBCT- Cone Beam Computed Tomography - Provides for more detailed and accurate diagnosis COMPLIMENTARY METAL OXIDE SEMICONDUCTOR/ACTIVE PIXEL SENSOR ( CMOS/APS) - Silicon based, differs from the CCD detector in the way that the pixels are read. ADVANTAGES - 25 % greater resolution - Cheaper - Greater durability HISTORY MECHANISM - 1870-1895 vacuum tube experimentation - Pioneers 1. Hittorf 2. Goldstein 3. Crookes DISCOVERY- November 8, 1895 Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, Professor of Physics & Director of the Physical Institute University of Wurzburg - Incidental discovery during experimentation with fluorescence - First roentgenogram of his wife’s hand
