You cannot see a force but you can see what it does. You can also feel the effect of a force in your body. A force is a push or a pull experienced by an object. Vectors Vectors are represented with arrows proplem 1. Find the components of a 300-N force acting along the handle of a lawn-mower. The angle with the ground is 32 ? Fx = ? Fy = ? Assignment 20 Proplem : Resolving forces ? Calc. W Calc. F2 Calc. T1 T2 Moments of forces The moment of a force is a measure of the turning effect of the force about a point The moment depends on the following: 1. Magnitude of the applied force 2. Distance from point of application to pivot (location of applied force) 3. Angle ( direction of the applied force) moment of a force is not the same thing as force. moment of a force For rotational motion moment of a force = F.d sin  Torque A torque is an action that causes objects to rotate. Torque is not the same thing as force. For rotational motion, the torque is related to the rotational motion, not the force. Torque is created when the line of action of a force does not pass through the center of rotation. Torque is determined by (3) factors 1. Magnitude of the applied force 2. Distance from point of application to pivot (location of applied force) 3. Angle ( direction of the applied force) Example : An 80-N force acts at the end of a 12-cm wrench as shown. Find the torque ? EX. 3 cm EX EX. Calc. Torque Ex: Calc. total torque center of rotation Two conditions for a rigid body to be in static equilibrium: 1. Translational equilibrium: The net force on the rigid body must be zero :Σ𝑭=𝟎 2. Rotational equilibrium : The net torque on the rigid body about any point must be zero: Σ 𝝉=𝟎
