Definition of Terms: Image Enhancement. It is the procedure of improving the quality and information content of an image before processing. Image Manipulation. It refers to a process of bringing changes to a digitized image for transforming it to a desired image. It is an art of altering or modifying an image for different purposes using various techniques or using a photo editing software. Image manipulation is usually done to create good images for constructive purposes but there are instances where we have seen the misuse of this beautiful art. Layer. Layers are used in digital image editing to separate different elements of an image. A layer can be compared to a transparency on which imaging effects or images are applied and placed over or under an image. Mask. When talking about editing and processing images the term 'masking' refers to the practice of using a mask to protect a specific area of an image, just as you would use Prepared by: JOEL NALUS GOMEZ, LPT, MaEd THIS IS A PROPERTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL UNOFFICIAL USE, SHARING, OR REPRODUCTION OF ANY NATURE IN WHOLE OR PART IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS THE PONTIFICAL AND ROYAL CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES ---------------------------------------------- Senior High School masking tape when painting your house. Masking an area of an image protects that area from being altered by changes made to the rest of the image. Magic Wand. The magic wand is a tool that is used to select areas that are similar in tone and color. Usually, it is use to quickly select irregularly shaped regions. Clone Stamp. This tool gets rid of blemishes, spots or replace objects in your image. The clone stamp works by using a selected portion of the image as a brush texture to paint over other areas in the image. Prepared by: JOEL NALUS GOMEZ, LPT, MaEd THIS IS A PROPERTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL UNOFFICIAL USE, SHARING, OR REPRODUCTION OF ANY NATURE IN WHOLE OR PART IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS THE PONTIFICAL AND ROYAL CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES ---------------------------------------------- Senior High School A logo is a graphic mark, emblem, or symbol used to aid and promote public identification and recognition. It may be of an abstract or figurative design or include the text of the name it represents as in a wordmark. Key Elements of a Good Logo Design A logo is a significant part of creating and marketing your brand. Your brand communicates to your customers who you are and why you are relevant to them, while marketing is the way in which your organization manages this communication. A logo is important to both of these concepts because it acts both as a visual representation of your brand identity, and as a recognizable identifier for your services and/or products. Here are the characteristics of a good logo design: Simple. One of the more challenging tasks for any logo designer, can be explaining to a client the importance of keeping a logo design relatively simple. Many people approach a designer with an existing idea, which is often times overly complex or elaborate. It is the designer’s job to explain why “less is more” when it comes to logo design. Reasons to Keep Logos Simple More identifiable when viewed at smaller sizes (business cards, web logo, etc); Easier to recognize when printed at lower quality or on rougher surfaces (clothing, newspaper); Require less time to retain visually and are easier to remember. Ways to Avoid an Overly Complex Logo Use distinct lines, clean shapes and legible text; Don’t try to say too much. A logo doesn’t need to incorporate every aspect of a business. There is a fine line that must be walked by designers when it comes to creating “simple” logo/identities. Many of the best logos are very simple in nature, however going too simple invites greater possibility of creating a design that closely mimics one of the millions of other designs in existence. Memorable. A logo is often the first thing people will see when introduced to a company. Which is why it’s so important to make a good first impression…a memorable one. For a logo to leave a lasting impression, it should: Prepared by: JOEL NALUS GOMEZ, LPT, MaEd THIS IS A PROPERTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL UNOFFICIAL USE, SHARING, OR REPRODUCTION OF ANY NATURE IN WHOLE OR PART IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS THE PONTIFICAL AND ROYAL CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES ---------------------------------------------- Senior High School Be consistent with using the same color schemes whenever possible; Be used whenever possible (business cards, letterhead, vehicle, clothing, web); Be unique; Be simple and uncluttered. Appropriate/Relevant. A great looking logo is useless if it doesn’t properly represent what it’s being created for. Having a logo that is not appropriate or relevant may give the wrong impression, detour potential customers and ultimately hurt sales. An appropriate logo will: Properly reflect the feeling or vibe of the business, either literally or figuratively. Avoid use of lettering/type that misrepresents the style of the business. Usually avoid colors that don’t embody the style of the business. Versatile. A versatile logo is one that can be used in unlimited applications (website, business card, vehicle lettering, apparel, etc.) with no troubles. Some logos are created for web use only, so this isn’t a concern, but for all the rest, this is an important thing to consider. A versatile logo will: Look good in smaller sizes (on business cards, etc.); Work well in single color. Consider this; will the logo look good when printed in reverse color? Not rely on color to achieve its effect; Not be overly detailed; Not be too tall or too wide. Unique. For a logo to be unique, it not only needs to be different, it needs to properly represent the business it is being created for. Simply creating an abstract or overly elaborate Prepared by: JOEL NALUS GOMEZ, LPT, MaEd THIS IS A PROPERTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL UNOFFICIAL USE, SHARING, OR REPRODUCTION OF ANY NATURE IN WHOLE OR PART IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS THE PONTIFICAL AND ROYAL CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES ---------------------------------------------- Senior High School graphic will certainly make it unique, but is it appropriate, versatile, memorable. An effective logo will be all of these things. Here are some ways to achieve a more unique logo: Being aware of the cliché, overused imagery and logo styles. This way they can be avoided. Researching the business and its competitors. The more that is known, the easier it is to personalize a logo. Being careful of designing logos that are too simple. The likelihood that some other designer had the same very idea is greater. Timeless. Having to frequently update a dated logo is bad for a business trying to establish a recognizable brand or identity. The greatest logo designs stand the test of time. Coca Cola is a perfect example. The same logo concept created over 100 years ago is still being used today. While it’s rare that a company uses the same design for this long, it is not uncommon for large brands to stick with the same logo concept for long periods of time. For a logo to last, it should: Be able to adapt to company growth. An overly specific logo will prove difficult if it’s business decides to branch out into new services or offer new products. Avoid trends. Every year, new logo trends are the craze, until the next craze of course. Aesthetically Pleasing. A logo can follow all of the principles addressed above, but if it’s ugly it just won’t be very effective. It doesn’t take a trained eye for people to notice poor looking design. To create better looking logos: Use typefaces that match the style of the logo graphic. Avoid using too many colors and colors that clash. Keep things visually balanced as best as possible. Pay special attention to the details. Take time to caucus and pick an appropriate name for an advocacy group that will educate your target audience about the assigned topic. Since you are in the Health Allied field, your main objective is to campaign awareness of certain issues, social or political, or about your “body system” and discuss preventive measures in taking care of it. Advocacy Group Name: 1. Gather your group and brainstorm a list of words that describe your advocacy group. 2. Arrange the words from the best identifier to the least. Limit the words to three. Caucus again and share thoughts on those words. 3. Now pick an appropriate name for your advocacy group. 4. Think of objects or images that you can attribute to the top three words you’ve selected. Give your thoughts to your group and decide which of these objects are you going to incorporate to your logo. 5. Conceptualize your logo. Draw a draft of your logo and show it to your groupmates. Give your thoughts. 6. Consider the key elements of logo design and decide what objects will comprise your logo. This includes text and graphics. Consider these thoughts: Does your logo say what your advocacy all about? Is the logo simple, memorable, relevant, and appropriate? If you are to use the logo in fliers and brochures, will it have the same effect if you are to deploy it as a digital content online? Will the logo be versatile and timeless? 7. Finalize your logo concept and take a picture of it. This will serve as your basis in digitizing the logo in your next activity.
