How was the church reordered under the Long Parliament? The Root and Branch petition, signed by 15,000 Londoners asked for the abolition of episcopacy. Puritans MPs were able to force the king to remove bishops from the Privy Council, and to pass a bill in the House of Commons to remove them from the Lords. But, the attempt to abolish episcopacy failed. 1643 the Parliamentarians signed the Covenant with the Scots which included the establishment of a Presbyterian church in England as an aim.
