Last year: See diagram England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland. Why does the UK landscape vary? Class reading Landscapes in the UK vary from place to place. This is mainly due to geology - the different types of rock beneath our feet. Map A shows a simple geology map of the UK. Notice that there are many types of rock in the UK. This explains why we have such a varied landscape, with mountains and lowlands. Granite (photo B) is one of the hardest and toughest rocks in the UK. It forms upland areas such as Copy - Dartmoor in south-west England and Geology - the study of the rocks is also found in north-west Scotland. Lowlands - flat land not much higher than sea level Discuss with your partner… Be prepared to share your answers! 1. What types of rocks lie under London? Clays and sands 2. What is the geology of South West England like? Mixture of limestones and sandstones and granite which is less resistant to erosion, so forms high land. 3. What type of rocks form the Highlands in Scotland. Igneous rocks (other than granite) Copy - Geology - the study of the rocks Lowlands - flat land not much higher than sea level The Rock Cycle Task 1: In pairs, read the information about the three types of rock and fill in the gaps to explain how each type of rock is formed. Task 2: Now that you have read about each type of rock, complete the Rock Cycle diagram to show how different processes change one rock type into another. Challenge (Write in full sentences): Look back at your completed rock cycle and find ‘sediment’. Suggest why most sediment is deposited in the sea. Check your answers! Check your answers! Check your answers! Plenary - If this is the answer, what is the question? Rules: 1. Work quickly in pairs to write down the question to the following answers. 2. Once you have written down your questions, you must shout out “We have the questions!” 3. You both must then read out the questions to all four answers to the rest of the class. 4. The first pair to write down the correct questions will receive 5 achievement points! 1. 2. The study of rocks Sedimentary Igneous Metamorphic 3. 4.
