OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson the students should be able to: Explain that knowing oneself can make a person accept his or her strengths and limitations and dealing with other better. Share his or her unique characteristics, habits, and experiences. “KNOWING ONESELF” “He who knows others is wise; he who knows himself is enlightened” Dimension of the Self - The word “SELF” is popularly and generally defines as what an individual sees, perceives and defines oneself apart from others. - The “self-perception” is a simple yet complex concept. The self as we known it is divided into three known dimensions; Physical, Psychological, and spiritual Physical Dimension The first dimension revolves around the physical body of human being; its process, functions, mechanisms and chemistry. This dimension is responsible for giving us the ability to move our muscles, to perceive our surroundings, and to think of the ideas and opinions that bring wonders to our lives and of others. Psychological Dimension Contains the concept of stress, cognitive, behavior, attitude, emotion, and ultimately personality. The psychological dimension has both external and internal factors that can or cannot be measured, observe and calculated. Spiritual Dimension Allows us to view ourselves in a spiritual level as spiritual beings. This dimension cannot be observed but can be subjectively altered and perceived by the person Components of Attitude Self-concept and Self-esteem Self-concept is our cognition to ourselves, what we think and know about our identity, personality and individuality. It requires a lot of self evaluation and reflection. Self-esteem it is more situational approach in terms of attitude because self-esteem is how we value our selves, given the negative and positive feedback we receive. Summary The self has three dimensions- Physical, psychological and spiritual. Attitude Composes of affect, cognition and behavior. Attitude can occur in our awareness or off our awareness. Behavior can be overt or covert. Attitude can be shaped through various ways such as learning or experience. Self-esteem and self concept are two different concepts. Self-esteem is how you feel for yourself while self-concept is what you think of yourself.
