BRIEF SUMMARY The Katipunan and the "Kartilya ng Katipunan" stand for a larger revolutionary movement that aimed to reform Filipino society to correspond with moral standards and social justice, rather than merely a struggle for independence. Filipinos' desire for liberty was made more united through a combination of aggressive opposition and ideological reform. "Kartilya" by Emilio Jacinto served as the revolutionaries' moral and philosophical manual, reminding them that genuine independence needs to be based in virtue. Together, the "Kartilya" and the Katipunan established the foundation for current Filipino nationalism and continuing pursuit of social equality. IMPORTANCE OF THE TEXT The historical context of Kartilya highlights the unwavering determination of the Filipino people throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to fight for their independence from the Spaniards. BACKGROUND OF THE AUTHOR Emilio Jacinto y Dizon Father - Mariano Jacinto Mother - Josefa Dizon Born in Tondo, Manila December 15, 1875 – April 16, 1899 Studied at Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and University of Santo Tomas to study law. Joined the secret society called Katipunan at 19 years old in 1894. BACKGROUND OF THE AUTHOR He became the advisor on fiscal matters and secretary to Andrés Bonifacio Emilio Jacinto is the youngest member of Katipunan Known as “Utak ng Katipunan” Wrote under a pen name "Dimasilaw" and used the alias "Pingkian" in Katipunan. Died due to malaria on 16 Abril 1899 in Magdalena, Laguna. His remains is at Himlayang Pilipino Memorial Park in Quezon City. CONTEXT OF THE DOCUMENT Emilio Aguinaldo: - Though not the creator, he became one of the most important figures in the Katipunan. - Played a crucial role in the Philippine Revolution in 1896 and efforts for Philippine independence.
