# Lecture/ Important Notes/ Verbatim/ Books ## Dr. Paul Tournier * A Swiss Physician * The pioneer of person-centered psychotherapy * Observed the contemporary approach to illness was purely organic and failed to consider the patient as a whole * Saw the need to consider not only the physical aspects of health but also the psychological and spiritual dimensions. * Healing is an effect and a sign of God’s mercy, extending the term of our life. * To know ourselves to be called by God is to believe in our vocation with as much conviction as St. Paul when he declares himself to be “separated unto the gospel of God” (Romans 1:1) * Our profession (being a physician) is a priestly ministry. I should like to see the church consecrating doctors just as it ordains its ministers. This would be in conformity with the gospel. * Even when the doctor believes he is obeying only his own feelings, his compassion for human suffering, he is at that moment the instrument of the divine compassion. ## Medicine of the Person * Not just another branch of medicine. * It is an attitude towards contact, an approach to patient-care, applicable in all areas. * It puts the emphasis on awareness of patients as whole persons, with places in their community and society. ## Objectives of a Medicine of the Person * To help patients find the meaning of their sickness and their life; * To deal with the problem of death; * To discover a specific ethical approach to their environment; * To open sources of love for themselves and for their fellow-men; * To sense the meaning of suffering… to find strength through the community for a new responsibility toward themselves and their fellow-men. ## Six Key Levels of Health Care Personalized medicine builds in this worldview to consider six key levels of health care (Fierz, 2004): 1. The Disease; 2. The Environment; 3. The Genes, which means the molecular traits and mechanisms;
