Summary
This document discusses musculoskeletal trauma, covering causes like accidents or overuse, different types of injuries (fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations), and the R.I.C.E method for treatment, as well as inflammatory conditions that may cause these injuries. It is part of the medical lectures/materials at FKIK UNIVERSITAS BENGKULU.

Sandro, SpB, Finacs MUSCULOSKELETAL TRAUMA Musculoskeletal Injuries Musculoskeletal injuries are conditions that affect the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and other components of the musculoskeletal system. WHO report on Musculoskeletal health shows that almost 1.71 billion individuals suffer from musculoskeletal conditions worldwide. What Causes Musculoskeletal Injuries 1. Trauma: Traumatic injuries result 2. Overuse: Overuse injuries develop from sudden, forceful impacts or gradually over time due to repetitive accidents. They can include motions or prolonged stress on a fractures, dislocations, sprains, particular body part. Common and strains. These injuries often examples include tendinitis, bursitis, happen during sports activities, and stress fractures. Overuse injuries falls, or motor vehicle accidents are commonly seen in athletes, musicians, and individuals with physically demanding jobs. 3. Degenerative Conditions: 4. Inflammation and Infection: Degenerative conditions, such as Inflammation of the musculoskeletal osteoarthritis and degenerative disc system can occur due to disease, result from the natural wear autoimmune disorders like and tear of the musculoskeletal rheumatoid arthritis or infectious system over time. These conditions conditions like septic arthritis. These can cause joint pain, stiffness, and conditions can cause joint swelling, reduced mobility. pain, and limited movement. Objectives obtain the knowledge and skills for recognizing and managing : 1. Dislocation 2. Soft Tissue Injuries 3. Fractures Types of Musculoskeletal Injuries Dislocation : Joint injury in which ligaments are torn and bone ends are Mechanism : no longer in contact. Blunt Trauma Sprains : Stretched or torn ligaments Penetrating Trauma Strain : Stretched or torn ot the tendon Direct Trauma or muscle Indirect Trauma Fracture : any break in the continuity of the bone Degrees of Sprain Grade 1 Grade 2 A mild sprain with slight stretching A moderate sprain with partial or some damage to the ligament tearing of the ligament. Symptoms fibers. Symptoms include minor include significant swelling, pain swelling, tenderness, and localized when moving, and moderate pain. functional limitation. Grade 3 A severe sprain with a complete tear of the ligament. Symptoms include significant swelling, severe pain, and difficulty walking. Treatments the R.I.C.E. method: Rest: Avoid the activity that caused your injury. Try not to use the injured part of your body while it heals. Ice: Apply a cold compress to your injury 15 minutes at a time, a few times a day. Wrap ice packs in a towel or thin cloth so they’re not directly touching your skin. Compression: Wrap an elastic bandage around your injured joint to help reduce swelling. Your provider can show you how to apply a compression wrap safely. Elevation: Keep your joint above the level of your heart as often as you can. You can also take anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen to help with pain and inflammation. For a grade 2 sprain, you can use an immobilization device or splint. For a grade 3 sprain, you might need a cast or brace for a couple of weeks. In some cases, surgery may be considered.
