Review For Finals Read, More Than A Carpenter: Ch 6 By Josh McDowell “The three main criteria of Historicity.” THE LIFE AND MIRACLES OF JESUS CHRIST Miracles and Their Meanings (Sabbath Miracles) The word "miracle" defines "an extraordinary and astonishing happening that is attributed to the presence and action of an ultimate or divine power". Miracles and Their Meanings To show God’s power and dominion over all creation. To confirm God's messengers. To demonstrate God's salvation / His judgment. In Old and New Testaments, miracles tend to fall into three identifiable categories of revelation. 1. At the time of Moses. 2. During the time of Elijah and Elisha. 3. Time of Jesus / by the Holy Spirit working through the Apostles Miracles of Jesus Four Types 1. Healing Miracles: sickness / diseases 2. Nature Miracles: calming the storm, walking on water, etc 3. Exorcisms: casting out demons 4. Resurrection: giving life to the dead Miracles and Their Meanings Jesus’ miracles were not random acts. They were done for specific reasons. 1. To Prove that He is God. 2. To show that He has control of creation. 3. To Show that He has the power to heal. 4. To prove that He was the promised Messiah. (To Fulfill prophecy) SABBATH MIRACLES Jesus also used miracles to correct false teachings about God and the Kingdom of Heaven. He performed certain (7) miracles on the Sabbath to correct misconceptions about the Sabbath and Sabbath keeping JESUS: LORD OF MAN AND THE SABBATH Mr 2:27 And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Mr 2:28 "Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath." HEALING ON THE SABBATH Man With the Withered Hand Matthew 12, Mark 3, Luke 6 Luke 6: 6 Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him. 9 Then Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?" Leader’s Reaction 10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. 11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. Woman With Infirmity Luke 13 Luke 13: 10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. Church Leader’s Reaction Lu 13: 14 But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, "There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day." Jesus’ Response Luke 13: 15 The Lord then answered him and said, "Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? 16 "So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound--think of it--for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?" The Impotent Man at Pool of Bethesda John 5 John 5: 2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. 5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? John 5: 7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. Leaders’ Reaction Joh 5: 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed. 16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. SABBATH: KILLING vs HEALING John 5: 18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. Man Born Blind Blind Man Healed on Sabbath John 9 John 9: 1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. John 9 13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. 14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. 15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. John 9 16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
