This statement came after the nation’s parliament passed a bill banning users under 16 from accessing social media platforms. After intense nationwide debate, Australia approved a social media ban for children on November 28th. The move sets a global precedent with some of the world’s strictest regulations targeting Big Tech. Bill Passed in Australian Parliament The bill was approved during a procedural hearing held on November 29th in the lower house of parliament. It was fast-tracked through the legislative process during the final week of the year, despite objections from politicians and social media companies who argued it hadn’t been thoroughly reviewed. At a press conference, Prime Minister Albanese stated, "Platforms now have a social responsibility to ensure the safety of our kids is a priority for them. Our goal is to ensure that parents can have a different conversation today and in the future." Strict Measures for Social Media Under the new law, tech giants like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Meta Platforms (META.O) must prevent minors under 16 from logging in. Companies that fail to comply could face fines of up to AUD 49.5 million (USD 32 million). The prohibition will take effect in a year, following a trial of enforcement strategies set to begin in January. Albanese Defends Fast-Tracking the Bill Albanese justified passing the measure before the age verification trial was complete. "We are making it very evident what we intend to do here," he said. Challenges in Enforcement Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 10 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 Albanese acknowledged potential difficulties, stating, "The law is clear and explicit. While we acknowledge that it is the right thing to do, we do not claim that its execution will be flawless. Similarly, the prohibition on alcohol for those under the age of 18 does not guarantee that they will never have access to it." Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 11 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 Google Antitrust Case: Canada Orders Google to Sell Two Services and Pay Fine Canada's antitrust watchdog is suing Google for allegedly engaging in anticompetitive behavior in its online advertising business. The agency has asked Google to sell off two of its ad tech businesses and pay a fine. According to the Competition Bureau, this kind of action is required since Google "illegally" linked its ad tech tools together in order to keep its dominant market position, according to an inquiry into the business. Who is In-Charge of the Google Case? The case is currently being heard by the Competition Tribunal, a quasi-judicial body of Canada that considers claims pertaining to violations of the Competition Act that are brought up by the Competition Commissioner. Google Instructed to Sell its Two Services The bureau is requesting that the tribunal mandate that Google sell two of its services: - ad exchange, AdX, and - publisher ad server, DoubleClick for Publishers. Google’s Monopoly in Online Ads Google is estimated to have a 90% market share in publisher ad servers, a 70% market share in advertiser networks, a 60% market share in demand-side platforms, and a 50% market share in ad exchanges. Google Accused of Market Abuse According to the bureau, Google's market dominance has stifled innovation, discouraged rival competition, increased advertising costs, and decreased publisher earnings. In a statement, Competition Commissioner Matthew Boswell stated, "Google has abused its dominant position in online advertising in Canada by engaging in conduct that locks market participants into using its own ad tech tools, excluding competitors, and distorting the competitive Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 12 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 process." Google’s Stance on the Matter However, according to Google, the online advertising market is a fiercely competitive industry. The bureau's complaint "ignores the intense competition where ad buyers and sellers have plenty of choice," according to a statement from Dan Taylor, Google's vice president of worldwide ads. Google plans to defend itself against the accusation, the statement continued. U.S. Seeks to Break Up Google Having been determined to have maintained an oppressive monopoly for the past ten years, U.S. officials want a federal judge to disband Google in order to stop the corporation from stifling competition through its dominating search engine. The U.S. Department of Justice suggested the split in a 23-page paper this month. The proposed penalties include limits to stop Android from favoring its own search engine and the sale of Google's market-leading Chrome web browser. India's nuclear-capable K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) was reportedly successfully tested from the newly commissioned nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat. The test was carried out in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday morning off the coast of Visakhapatnam. With a 3,500-kilometer striking range and solid fuel, the K-4 missile was fired from the 6,000-ton submarine. K4 Missile Launched from INS Arighaat Although the test has not been officially confirmed, sources close to the situation told to media sources confirmed that the K-4 missile was fired during the drill. As per the media sources, the missile test was carried out by INS Arighaat, which was put into service on August 29. This launch from a fully functional submarine marks a significant milestone for India's naval capabilities, as the K-4 missile had previously only been tested from underwater pontoons. Public Warning Issued Before the Launch According to insiders who spoke to the media, the test findings will be closely examined to ascertain whether the missile accomplished its intended requirements. India had previously announced a public area warning and notice to airmen (NOTAM) for an intermediate-range missile test in the Bay of Bengal between November 27 and 30. The missile launch followed that announcement. India conducted this missile test in order to strengthen its strategic defense posture. Significance of INS Arighaat India's second nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arighaat, greatly enhances the nation's nuclear deterrence. The submarine may carry nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, or SSBNs as they are known in the navy. The more sophisticated K-4 missiles, which have a strike range of 3,500 km, can be carried by INS Arighaat in contrast to India's first SSBN, INS Arihant, which is equipped with K-15 missiles with a 750 km range. This will revolutionize road travel between the city of Uttarakhand and the nation's capital. The road will cut the travel time between Akshardham in New Delhi and Akshardham, which is more than 210 kilometers away, from 6.5 hours to just 2.5 hours. Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Route Map Beginning in the national capital's Akshardham, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will travel via Ghaziabad, Baghpat, Shamli, Saharanpur, and Haridwar before arriving at NH-72 in Dehradun. The authorities are working hard to finish the project on time while ensuring high quality and meeting environmental standards. This expressway will transform connectivity in Uttarakhand, benefiting travelers, tourists, and freight transport by linking two major cities. Estimated Cost of Delhi-Dehradun Expressway The project began in early 2021 and has been developed in stages. The Delhi-Saharanpur section of the expressway is nearly ready for use, while the Saharanpur-Dehradun section is in its final stages of construction. It is expected that over 75% of the work will be completed by the end of 2024. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the estimated cost of this six-lane Delhi- Dehradun Greenfield Access Controlled Expressway is around Rs 12,000 crore. The expressway is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana. This parijyojana is a government program to improve road infrastructure across India. Asia’s Longest Wildlife Corridor The expressway features a 12-km elevated corridor near Rajaji National Park, which makes it the longest wildlife corridor in Asia. The corridor is designed in such a way that it protects the wild animals of the park from the sound disturbances of the vehicles by including sound barriers. Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 18 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 The project uses eco-friendly materials and green technology to reduce its environmental impact. Boosting Tourism and Economy The six-lane highway provides a smoother, faster route to Uttarakhand, cutting travel time and encouraging more tourists to visit. This is expected to boost tourism and support local economic growth. Modern Road Design and Technology The advanced design of the expressway will cut travel time to just 2.5 hours. With smart traffic management systems, the expressway will reduce traffic and enhance safety. The SC rejected these petitions. A bench made up of Justice PV Sanjay Kumar and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna upheld Parliament's "incontrovertible" authority to amend the Constitution under Article 368, so long as the changes do not conflict with the fundamental framework of the document. What is SC Ruling? The bench ruled that the Preamble's adoption date, November 26, 1949, cannot be used as grounds to invalidate amendments such as the insertion of specific terms. Chief Justice of India (CJI) clarified that the Constitution's adoption by the people does not restrict the amendment powers under Article 368. This clarification came as part of the judgment's key points, though the full judgment is still awaited. Who Filed the Petition? The petitions were filed by social worker Balram Singh, barrister Ashwini Upadhyay, and former BJP lawmaker Subramanian Swamy. They argued that the 42nd Amendment distorted the original intentions of the Constitution's framers. The petitioners claimed that the framers deliberately avoided using terms like "socialist" and "secular" during the Constituent Assembly debates. Petitions Against the Amendments The petitioners also challenged the legitimacy of the 1976 Parliament, which added these terms during the Emergency period. Singh’s lawyer, Vishnu Shankar Jain, argued that the Lok Sabha's extended term was intended for urgent needs and not for altering the Constitution. The petitioners maintained that adding these terms without public consultation went against the framers’ original intent. SC’s Ruling on Amendment Powers Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 27 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 The bench dismissed the petitioners’ claims, affirming that the Preamble can be amended by Parliament under Article 368. The court noted that the 42nd Amendment has undergone extensive judicial review and has continued to receive parliamentary support over the decades. 'Socialism' in India The court reiterated its previous stance on socialism, clarifying that in the Indian context, socialism signifies a welfare state focusing on equal opportunity and resource distribution. It emphasized that socialism in India does not hinder private enterprise, which continues to thrive in the country. ALSO READ: Maharashtra Next CM: Devendra Fadnavis Vs. Annapurna Devi, the Union Minister of Women and Child Development, inaugurated the "Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Campaign" on Wednesday. This campaign is also known as the Child Marriage Free India campaign. The campaign webpage was launched to prevent child marriage and other harmful practices. Its goal is to "help girls achieve their potential" by ending child marriages. 10 Years of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao The government started Beti Bachao Beti Padhao [rescue girls, educate girls] ten years ago in an effort to transform how society views girls. This development demonstrates how there is a change in the perspectives on the importance of the girl child. At the portal's inauguration, Devi stated, "The next step is to clear the way for her to fulfill all of her goals and not allow customs like child marriage to impede her potential development." Devi stated that India's efforts to prevent child marriages have received international recognition. According to UN data, South Asia has seen the biggest drop in child marriage, with India playing a major role in it. States Focused on the Campaign In some regions of India, child marriages are still common. The seven high-burden states—West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Tripura, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh—as well as 300 districts with rates higher than the national average would be the focus of the anti-child marriage campaign. By 2029, the goal is to lower the prevalence of child marriage to less than 5%. Government statistics shows that the rate of child marriage decreased from 47.4% in 2006 to 23.3% in 2019–21. Amendment in the Law The "Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Campaign" aims to amend the law to guarantee that 18 is the legal minimum age for marriage, with no exceptions, and to give minors legal protection through these amendments. The portal's goal is to make it easier to keep an eye on Child Marriage Prohibition Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 29 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 Officers (CMPOs) by bolstering oversight and assessment systems to guarantee that they actively prohibit child weddings and help those who have been affected. It aims to improve public access to information by making it readily available to facilitate improved support and communication. By implementing user-friendly techniques to encourage reporting by witnesses and victims, the portal seeks to streamline the process of reporting child marriages. Other Initiatives Taken by Modi Gov The government is working on initiatives like Nari Adalats (women's courts) and a guide on gender-inclusive communication to reduce biases in language. Devi mentioned that this effort is part of a larger goal to make India a developed nation by 2047, where girls play a key role in women-led progress. In October, the Supreme Court stated that the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act applies to all, regardless of personal laws, while highlighting legal gaps. It emphasized the need for community involvement, tailored preventive actions, collaboration across sectors, and training for law enforcement to address the issue effectively. His reluctance to submit a urine sample for a drug test during the national wrestling team's selection trials on March 10, 2024, led to his suspension. Bajrang Punia is no longer eligible to compete in professional wrestling or instruct overseas as a result of this ruling. This ruling goes beyond NADA's original temporary suspension in April 2024. Four Year Suspension NADA declared on November 27 that Punia would be suspended for four years, beginning on April 23, 2024, for violating the Anti-Doping Rules by refusing to cooperate with the doping check process. Why Did Punia Get Suspended Punia was first suspended by NADA on April 23, 2024, for failing to provide a sample for doping tests. This was followed by a suspension from United World Wrestling (UWW). Punia challenged the provisional suspension, and NADA’s Anti-Disciplinary Doping Panel (ADDP) temporarily lifted it on May 31, 2024. However, after several hearings and issuing a formal charge notice on June 23, 2024, the suspension was reinstated. Punia’s Reaction to NADA’s Doping Test The wrestler claimed he did not outright refuse the doping test. Instead, he sought clarification from NADA about using expired testing kits, citing past concerns with the agency. Punia argued that his actions were not an intentional refusal but a call for accountability and transparency. However, NADA dismissed Punia’s defense. It stated that his actions demonstrated clear disregard for his responsibilities. NADA referred to Articles 20.1 and 20.2 of the Anti-Doping Rules, which govern athlete conduct. US President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to impose heavy tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China as one of his first actions after taking office on January 26. Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump proposed a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on imports from China. Trump claimed that taking these measures is necessary to address illegal immigration and the drug trade. Invasion on US Borders Trump described the illegal immigration and the drug trade at the borders as an "invasion" and said the tariffs would remain in place until the issues were resolved. While similar to actions during his first term, these new tariffs could have a wider economic impact, potentially increasing prices for everyday items like cars and groceries in the US. Share Market Reaction Following Trump's declaration, the benchmark indexes Sensex and Nifty saw a two-day surge come to an end and closed down on Tuesday, reflecting dismal global market trends as the US President-elect raised fears about tariff threats. Trump's declaration also caused a significant decrease in the Mexican peso, the Canadian currency, and Asian stocks, among other global markets. Australia's dollar declined, and Japan's Nikkei fell 1.4%. How Will This Affect India? Donald Trump, who has called Prime Minister Narendra Modi "a friend" and visited India during his first term, has often criticized India’s trade practices. He referred to India as a “tariff king,” accusing it of imposing high duties on US goods. During a rally before his re-election, Trump praised Modi as a great leader but pointed out India’s high tariffs, saying, "India charges a lot. We have a good relationship, especially with Modi, who Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 40 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 has done a great job." In his first term, Trump imposed higher tariffs on Indian steel and aluminum, which led India to retaliate with duties on US products like almonds and apples. Copyright © www.jagranjosh.com Page 59 of 188 Current Affairs | November 2024 India's Bid for 2036 Olympics: Which Indian City is Most Likely to Host the Olympics? India's interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games has been formally expressed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), marking a major step towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's objective. On October 1, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) submitted a Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Future Host Commission, officially beginning India's bid for the global event. Which Indian City will Host Olympics 2036? With the interest showed by India in hosting the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics, attention has shifted to which city will be selected. However, there is no official decision yet. While Ahmedabad was initially considered the top contender, a new development has placed the Taj Mahal at the heart of India's bid. Top Choices Include Delhi and Agra As per a media report, Delhi's National Capital Region (NCR) and Agra are the top choices for hosting the Olympics in 2036. Delhi, as the capital and a hub for many tourist spots, plays a big role in this decision. The region also has improved connectivity with more airports to handle a large number of visitors. Additionally, there is plenty of land available for new development. Why is Agra being Considered? The Taj Mahal is considered to be a key factor in the choice and may serve as the focal point to support India's bid for the Olympics hosting. The 2012 London Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics have both relied on famous locations to hold the major event. While the Eiffel Tower was at the heart of Paris' candidacy in 2024, the River Thames and Tower Bridge played a significant role in the London Games. One of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal is regarded as India's most famous landmark. Thus it brings the city to the forefront of the bid of India’s candidacy for Olympic 2036.
