Nose Boundaries  Anteriorly: nose has 2 openings “nostril” separated by nasal septum  Posteriorly: the nasal cavity open in the nasopharynx through choana  Roof: wy o Nasal bone o Frontal bone o Cribriform plate of ethmoid o Body of sphenoid da  Nasal septum: o Cartilaginous part o Vomer en o Perpendicular plate of ethmoid  Floor: hard palate “palatine process of maxilla + horizontal part of palatine bone”  Lateral wall: o Lacrimal bone H o Superior & middle concha of ethmoid o Inferior Concha R. o Maxilla o Palatine bone o Pterygoid plate D Anatomist “Nose" Features of lateral wall of nose  Vestibule: hairy part of the nose lining the nostril  Nasal conchae: Superior & middle conchae are part of ethmoidal bone while inferior Concha is a separate bone wy  Spheno-ethmoidal recess: above superior concha It receives opening of sphenoidal sinus da  Superior meatus: below superior Concha. It receive opening of posterior ethmoidal sinus en  Middle meatus: Below middle concha. It is characterized by:  Ethmoidal bulla: Receives opening of middle ethmoidal sinus H  Hiatus semilunaris: Receive Anterior ethmoidal & Maxillary sinuses R.  Infundibulum “anterior part of hiatus semilunaris” Receive the opening of Frontal sinus D  Inferior meatus: Below inferior concha. It receive opening of nasolacrimal duct Anatomist “Nose" Para-nasal sinuses Function: o Lightening of skull weight o Resonance of voice o Increase surface area for the air conditioning wy Types: Frontal sinus:  Found in frontal bone  Open in Anterior part of hiatus semilunaris “infundibulum” da  Nerve supply: supra-orbital & supra-trochlear nerves Sphenoidal sinus:  Found in sphenoidal bone  Open in spheno-ethmoidal recess en  Nerve supply: posterior ethmoidal nerve Ethmoidal sinuses:  Found in ethmoidal bone H  Posterior ethmoidal open in superior meatus Middle ethmoidal open in ethmoidal bulla R. Anterior ethmoidal open in hiatus semilunarius Maxillary sinus: " the largest sinus and the only found at birth"  Found in maxilla  Open in posterior part of hiatus semilunaris D  Nerve supply: infra-orbital & superior alveolar nerves N.B: extraction of deep rooted canine, premolars, 3rd molar may cause maxillary fistula Anatomist “Nose" Arterial supply External nose:  Dorsal nasal of ophthalmic artery  Infra-orbital of maxillary artery wy  Superior labial branch of facial artery Lateral wall:  Spheno-palatine from maxillary da  Greater palatine from maxillary  Anterior ethmoidal of ophthalmic  Anterior superior alveolar from maxillary artery en Nasal septum:  Spheno-palatine from maxillary artery “the main artery” H  Greater palatine from maxillary artery  Anterior ethmoidal of ophthalmic artery R.  Superior labial branch of facial artery Little “Kiesselbach” area:  Antro-inferior part of nasal septum D  Branches of arteries supplying nasal septum anastomose at this area  It is common site for epistaxis Anatomist “Nose" Nerve supply External nose:  Infra-trochlear of ophthalmic supply bony part of nose  External nasal of ophthalmic supply cartilaginous part wy  Infra-orbital: supply ala of nose Lateral wall:  Short Spheno-palatine da  Greater palatine nerves  Anterior ethmoidal  Anterior superior alveolar en Nasal septum:  Long Spheno-palatine “naso-palatine”  Anterior ethmoidal Olfactory nerve: H R.  Receptors: in roof of nasal cavity  Course: pass through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid.  Lesion: Anosmia (loss of smell) D Anatomist “Nose"
