Irregular verbs Most English verbs are regular and add –ED in the Simple Past and past participle (play played played). However, there are over 200 main verbs that are irregular and do not add –ED. The list below covers the most commonly known. We can distinguish three main types of irregular verbs: 1. All three parts are identical hurt hurt hurt 2. Two parts are identical spend spent spent 3. All three parts are different speak spoke spoken From left to right you will find the infinitives, Simple Past forms, past participles (used for perfect tenses) and their Dutch translations. e.g. I spoke to Annie yesterday. (Simple Past) I have/had spoken to Annie. (Present/Past Perfect) Legend to the grid below:* = regular forms are preferred for verbs whereas irregular verbs are more used for adjectives. Example: He spoiled the occasion with his stupid remark. The spoilt boy was impossible in class.
