Irregular Verbs in English
- Most verbs in English are regular, they take the "-ed" ending for the past tense and past participle forms.
- However, over 200 verbs are irregular, they have unique forms for the past tense and the past participle forms.
- There are three main types of irregular verbs:
- All three forms are identical: hurt - hurt - hurt
- Two forms are identical: spend - spent - spent
- All three forms are different: speak - spoke - spoken
- The grid below lists the most common irregular verbs in English.
- The columns represent the infinitive, the simple past form, the past participle form, and the Dutch translation of the verb.
- Some words have both a regular and an irregular past participle form, the irregular form is usually used as an adjective, the regular form is preferred for verbs.
