Introduction To Lexicology and Stylistics Introduction to Stylistics What is stylistics: qStylistics, or ‘literary linguistics’ as it is sometimes called, is the study and analysis of texts; it is not exclusively, the study and analysis of literary texts. The origins of stylistics go back to the poetics, and especially to the rhetoric, of the ancient classical world. qStylistics can also be seen as a discipline that studies the ways in which language is used; it is a discipline that studies the style of language in use. qStylistics is also defined as the study of different styles that are present either in a given utterance or a written text or document. The consistent appearance of a certain structure, items, and elements in a speech, utterances or a given text is one of the major concerns of stylistics. Style: qStyle is a persons distinctive language and habits, or set of individual characteristics of language use e.g. Hemingway's style Henry James's style Mark Twain’s style Shakespearean style qSome or all the language habit shared by a group of people at one time, or over a period e.g. Elizabethan style Stylistics is linguistics study of style in a scientific and systematic way concerning the manners or linguistic features of different varieties of language at different levels. In any given text or work one can look at the linguistics descriptions of the following: qLevel of phonology/ graphology: The organization of sounds in the work the written system of the language. qLevel of lexis: Study the choice of word and their meanings. qLevel of syntax/grammar: Study the ordering and connecting words into sentences. qLevel of semantics: To have a look at the overall meaning of the text. Word Formation qword formation is how words are made to enrich the vocabulary of the language. Etymology Etymology is the study of the historical description of vocabulary. Lexicography qLexicography is the practice of writing dictionaries. ‘’The day a dictionary is published it is out of date’’ Phraseology qPhraseology is the study of fixed expressions or group of expressions used by a particular group of people.
