LESSON 2 INTRODUCTION TO GRAMMAR IN LANGUAGE TEACHING RYAN A. JANCINAL, LPT, PHD WHAT IS GRAMMAR? Grammar is the system of rules that governs how words are combined to form sentences. It includes syntax (sentence structure), morphology (word forms), and semantics (meaning). Grammar as Form, Meaning, and Use: Form - The structural rules and patterns of a language. Meaning - The interpretations or semantic functions grammar conveys. Use -The contexts and communicative purposes for applying grammatical structures. ROLE OF GRAMMAR IN LANGUAGE LEARNING Historical Perspectives: Early language teaching focused heavily on explicit grammar instruction (e.g., Grammar-Translation Method). Later methods, such as the Communicative Approach, reduced the focus on grammar, emphasizing communication. Current Views: Grammar remains essential for accuracy and meaningful communication. A balance is needed between fluency (communication) and accuracy (grammatical correctness). THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTEXT Teaching grammar in isolation may lead to poor transfer to real-life communication. Contextualized instruction helps learners see how grammar functions in authentic situations. Integrating Grammar with Skills: Reading: Understanding sentence structures to comprehend texts. Writing: Using grammar to construct coherent and grammatically correct sentences. Listening and Speaking: Applying grammar to understand and produce oral communication effectively. APPROACHES TO TEACHING GRAMMAR RYAN A. JANCINAL, LPT, PHD APPROACHES TO TEACHING GRAMMAR Traditional Approaches Explicit Grammar Instruction: Grammar rules are taught directly to students. Common in Grammar-Translation and Audio-Lingual Methods. Strengths: Provides clarity and structure. Limitations: May not encourage communicative competence. APPROACHES TO TEACHING GRAMMAR Grammar in the Communicative Context: Focuses on using grammar to achieve communicative goals. Errors are treated as natural parts of language development. Strengths: Enhances fluency and practical use of language. Limitations: May neglect accuracy in favor of fluency. APPROACHES TO TEACHING GRAMMAR Cognitive and Usage-Based Approaches Grammar as Patterns: Learners are encouraged to notice patterns and regularities in the language. Based on research in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) that suggests grammar is learned through exposure and meaningful use. Key Techniques: Consciousness-raising activities, noticing tasks, and input enhancement. APPROACHES TO TEACHING GRAMMAR Integrative Approaches Form-Meaning-Use Connection: Grammar teaching should integrate: Form: Rules and structures. Meaning: The function or purpose of the grammar point. Use: When and why it is appropriate in communication. Contextualized Grammar Instruction: Grammar is embedded in authentic, meaningful tasks. Examples: Role-plays, discussions, and project-based tasks. APPROACHES TO TEACHING GRAMMAR Role of Implicit and Explicit Learning Implicit Learning: Acquiring grammar through exposure and practice without conscious attention to rules. Explicit Learning: Deliberate focus on grammatical structures and rules. Blended Approaches: Use implicit learning for natural acquisition and explicit teaching for clarity and reinforcement.
