Explain importance of ergonomics in workplace. 2 Scope Definition of Ergonomics. Types of Ergonomics. Importance of Ergonomics in Workplace. 3 Introduction to Ergonomics 4 Ergonomics Roots in the Greek word ”ergon” which means ‘to work or accomplish’ and “nomos” which means ‘law or custom’. A science on how to fit the task and working environment to the worker using scientific approach “Fit the task to the Man” 5 Ergonomics and the Workplace “Ergonomics” The study and design of work and equipment in relation to the physiological and psychological capabilities of people Frame of Reference 7 Types / Domains of Ergonomics 7 Three Domains of Ergonomics 1) Physical ergonomics Concerned with human anatomical, anthropometric, physiological and biomechanical characteristics as they relate to physical activity. Relevant topics : working postures, materials handling, repetitive movements, work related musculoskeletal disorders, workplace layout, safety and health. 8 Three Domains of Ergonomics 2) Cognitive ergonomics Concerned with mental processes, such as perception, memory, reasoning, and motor response, as they affect interactions among humans and other elements of a system. Relevant topics : mental workload, decision-making, skilled performance, human-computer interaction, human reliability, work stress and training as these may relate to human-system design. 9 Three Domains of Ergonomics 3) Organizational ergonomics Concerned with the optimization of sociotechnical systems, including their organizational structures, policies, and processes. Relevant topics: communication, crew resource management, work design, design of working times, teamwork, participatory design, community ergonomics, cooperative work, new work paradigms, virtual organizations, and quality management.
