Introduction to Education Chapter one Basic Conceptions Education Types Education Agencies INTRODUCTION  Education is an essential process in human development.. What is the meaning of education? Etymological concept of Education  The word education is derived from Latin word EDUCERE , EDUCARE & EDUCATUM which means “to learn", "to Know” and "to lead out”. Etymological terms Meaning 1. Educare To bring up, to nourish. 2. Educere To lead out or to draw out. 3. Educo To letter ‘E’ means out and 'Duco’ means to lead. 4. Educatum The act of teaching or training. Narrow Concept of Education In narrow sense of the term, Education is equalled with instructions given in formal educational institutions, namely schools, colleges and universities. It doesn’t include the Education outside of four walls of institution. Emphasis on bookish knowledge. Not a lifelong process, it is over with completion of schooling. Broader concept of Education Education is a life long & continuous process. According to its concept Education is universal, we can gain Education from anywhere, anytime. There is no bound of place and time Education is the life long process. It comprises the totality of our experiences. Some definitions of education  Psychology: Education is the process of teaching and learning expected patterns of human behavior, and developing new behaviors in the child, or reinforcing behaviors that already exist.  Sociology: It is a process of socialization aiming to transfer the individual from a mere biological being to a social being able to live the realities of his time and society.  culture: Education is a mean of transmitting cultural heritage from one generation to another, and from one society to another. Some definitions of education  Philosophy: Plato: Education develops in the body and soul of the pupil all the beauty and all the perfection he is capable of. Aristotle's : Education is the creation of sound mind in a sound body. It develops man’s faculty specially his mind so that he may be able to enjoy the contemplation of supreme truth, goodness and beauty. Rousseau : Education is the child’s development from within. Some definitions of education  John Dewey "Education is the development of all those capacities in the individual which will enable him to control his environment and fulfil his responsibilities.  Heinrich Pestalozzi "Education is natural harmonious and progressive development of man's innate powers."  Herbert Spencer "Education is complete living." Comprehensive meaning of education  Education may be defined as a purposive, conscious or unconscious, psychological, sociological, scientific and philosophical process, which brings about the development of the individual to the fullest extent and also the maximum development of society in such a way that both enjoy maximum happiness and prosperity. In brief, education is the development of individual according to his needs and demands of society, of which he is an integral part. EDUCATION Education is a life-long process which is always used to imply a positive state of mind. Education: Knowledge acquired by formal learning and instruction. LEARNING Learning:The cognitive process of acquiring new skills or knowledge. TEACHING Teaching is the process of imparting knowledge, skills, and values to others SCHOOLING The process of being formally educated in a school (as opposed to self-study, online learning, private tutorship etc Questions?????????  It is a continuous process.  It is knowledge or experience.  It is development of particular aspects of human personality or a harmonious integrated growth.  It is conducive for the good of the individual or the welfare of the society.  It is a liberal discipline or a vocational course.  It is stabilizer of social order, conservator of culture, an instrument of change and social reconstruction. Education Types  Education refers to the development of the learning and thinking process. It goes beyond the four walls of the classroom. It is all about gaining experience and therefore we can divide education into three main types:  Formal Education  Informal Education  Non-formal Education Formal Education  it takes place within the school. It refers to the basic academic knowledge that a child learns in a formal manner.  This continues from an elementary school to secondary school and further on to colleges. Such an education is provided by specially qualified teachers who are efficient enough with the art of instruction.  The student and the teacher are both aware of the facts and engage themselves through a process of education.  Some of the examples of formal education are classroom learning, Institute grading/certification, or planned education of different subjects with a proper syllabus acquired by attending an institution. Characteristics of Formal Education:  It follows a particular structure of delivery  It is highly planned and deliberate(intended).  It is chronological and systematic  There is a regular fee that is required to be paid  Its demand is highly qualified experts  It is subject-oriented and time-bound Advantages of Formal Education:  It is organized and scheduled  It happens in a step-by-step systematic manner  It is the most basic knowledge that is to be acquired by every individual to learn various other things  It is certified and acquired by professionals and teachers Disadvantages of Formal Education:  Sometimes, brilliant students get bored because of the long (time) tenure of academic sessions.  Exams and grades can sometimes lead to stress and anxiety.  It is costly and rigid.  An unprofessional and non-standard education system may also cause wastage of time and money. Informal education  Characteristics of Informal Education:  It is an independent form of study with no definite syllabus  It is not preplanned and does not have a proper timetable  It is an experience that is gained through practice. It does not require a fee payment all the time.  It is a lifelong process in a natural way  There are no certificates or degrees involved Advantages of Informal Education  It is a natural learning process that can come from anywhere and everywhere.  It requires regular practice and reinforcing.  It utilizes a variety of techniques and does not have a specific time span.  There is no need to hire experts or professionals for this learning. Disadvantages of Informal Education  There is plenty of misinformation available on various social media platforms.  It does not follow a proper schedule or a timespan.  There is an absence of discipline and attitude amongst the learners.  Results are highly unpredictable. Non Formal Education  It refers to adult basic education, adult literacy education, or skill development. It can take different forms of learning, which is consistently and systematically provided in order to develop a particular skill or ability in an individual.  This type of education is highly flexible and includes a wide range of activities. Some of the examples may be fitness programs, community-based adult education courses, and free courses on different platforms, etc. Characteristics of Non-formal Education:  It is planned but takes place apart from the academic education provided by the school education system.  It is highly flexible and adjustable.  There is generally no age limit to gain this type of education.  It may or may not involve certificates or fees.  It can be either part-time or full-time or as a profession.  It includes both theoretical and practical education. Advantages of Non-formal Education:  It is an open-ended educational system available both in the public and private domains.  There is no need to conduct regular examinations.  Diplomas, certificates, and awards are not essential because it is generally a kind of skill development.  It involves the practical application of the theoretical knowledge obtained. Disadvantages of Non-formal Education:  Disadvantages of Non-formal Education:  If you are learning it just as a hobby, you don't require a professional or a trained teacher to impart non-formal education.  No regular examinations are conducted to evaluate the skill development  High possibility of fake certifications through different institutions
