Information and Communication Technology (ICT) & the World of Work Questions – Pair Activity What ways have you used ICT during LCVP? What IT Skills are necessary for an employee to have in today’s workplace? How could ICT be used effectively by a business? Challenges that businesses who use technology face? What Ways have you used ICT in your LCVP? 1. Microsoft Word – for writing letters/permission slips for summary report and enterprise action plan. For typing up your portfolio entries. For making posters to highlight your fundraising event etc. 2. Online research – for investigating about entrepreneurs, for researching about different business in your community, for researching different types of Voluntary and Non voluntary businesses in your area etc. 3. Youtube/videos – to help in your understanding of different topics. Teamwork videos, listening to entrepreneurs and their experiences etc. 4. Recording interviews – when practicing talking about myself for the LCVP recorded interview. 5. E-mailing – for emailing my teacher, emailing businesses asking them questions and if they could visit our LCVP class and give us an informative talk etc. 6. Production of portfolio items - typing up reports and printing your portfolio items. 7. Publisher – for creating posters for your Enterprise Action Plan 8. Powerpoint – for putting your notes together for different topics ICT skills that employees need in today’s workplace Employees need to: 1. Effectively communicate through e-mail to customers/suppliers/colleagues/online sales in their particular job. 2. They need to be able to Use, manage and update social media for the business they are working in. 3. They need to be able to Research online and check out what competitors are doing and to research latest trends and what the customers wants. 4. They need to be able to Create, design, code and maintain the businesses website. Design eye catching advertisements etc. 5. They need to be able to Create, design, develop and update Apps for the business. They need to be familiar with the terminology used for ICT in the workplace for example; upload, download etc. 6. They need to be very competent in word processing, type letters and reports. Making sure all documents are professional. 7. They need to be able to Use software specific to their job – CAD, Microsoft Office, Sage Line 50 etc. ICT could be used effectively by a business by: - could be used to source and order raw materials 1. The internet/website/online at the lowest possible cost/advertisement/marketing/recruitment of staff 2. A social media presence could be created such as Facebook or Twitter to provide information and updates about the company’s products. It could also be used to take orders/Apps. 3. Email could be used to contact customers/suppliers/staff 4. Word processing could be used to create invoices and other necessary documents. The mail merge facility could be used for sending letters to customers 5. A database programme could be used to set up the details for all customers / suppliers / staff / and for stock control in a business 6. File management – ease of access to information, create an easy to use filing system for all employees in the business, the benefit of this is that it saves time. When a business saves time they save money. ICT could be used effectively by a business by: 7. Spreadsheets could be used for budgeting purposes as well as presenting financial statements. 8. CAD/CAM- can be used for product design and manufacture. 9. Desk-top publishing could be used for creating brochures to showcase the company’s products, for printing labels and creating posters. 10. ICT allows for flexible work options, staff are always connected and they have the opportunity to work from home, they can complete video conferencing calls through zoom and teams. 11. Business can order their supplies by doing Online shopping, they can transfer money and they can complete their banking through the use of ICT without having to physical go into a bank. They can set up direct debits and standing orders from their office computer. 12. Businesses can Provide free WiFi to attract customers to their premises. 13. They can observe if employees are using their time effectively and Monitor employees by having a check in and check out log on their computers. They can see when an employee is actively engaged in work. 14. They can make Powerpoint keynote presentations to present to other employees in the business or to future customers. What Challenges affect organisations and businesses that use ICT? 1. The Cost of technology. It requires businesses to put a lot of capital and investment and technology news to constantly be updated because it becomes obsolete so quickly. 2. Another challenge is having to constantly complete ongoing maintenance and IT support. This again can cost a business a lot of money. 3. Broadband and how available is it for your business? If a business doesn’t have good broadband this will be a big challenge for them to complete orders and communicate with their customers effectively. 4. Staff have to be trained to use the technology so that they are utilising it and getting the most from it. Technology costs money so it needs to be used effectively. 5. Businesses must make sure to constantly update their security and antivirus software so that all of their information is secure from hackers and competitors who may steal vital information. This is a challenge for a business. 6. Since May 2018, GDPR and data protection is something that every business needs to consider and abide by the law and not release any confidently information. 7.
