# Terms related to earthquakes ## Seismology The study of the earth science study of earthquakes ## Seismologists The scientists who study earthquakes and the hazards. ## Seismograph The instrument that detects and records the ground motion in the seismograph. ## Seismograms The graphical output of the seismograph. ## Magnitude Is a measure of the amount of energy released from the source or hypocenter, the region of earthquakes. ## Scale The magnitude of an earthquake can be expressed using the Richter Scale. It was developed in 1935 by Charles Richter. ## Foreshocks A series of tremors that occur before the main earthquake. ## Aftershocks Are weaker earthquakes that follow the main shocks and can cause further damage. ## Earthquake hazards - Ground shaking - Ground rupture ## Before Earthquakes - Familiarize yourself with earthquake hazards in your areas. ## During Earthquakes - Cover - Hold on - Drop ## After Earthquakes - Evacuate as soon as the shaking stops, take the fastest safe wayout. - Expect aftershocks. Be updated, monitor the situation from the electronic devices - Check yourself and others for injuries. ## During Earthquakes - If outside, move to an open area. - If you are near a shore, move quickly to higher grounds. - Move away from steep slope. - Stop if inside a moving vehicle. ## After Earthquakes - Do not cross bridges, over passes.
