## Forms of Art - **Examples:** (erimrfn) - Emails and letters - Reports - Instructions and materials - Memos - Resumes and cover letters ## Writing ### **Literary Genre** or **Type** - From "literature" - A type or category of literature - Body of written works - Books and other writing ### Four Main Literary Genres: 1. **Drama:** A play for theater told by character dialogue (talking). 2. **Fiction:** A story that did not actually happen in real life. 3. **Non-Fiction:** Real and factual. 4. **Poetry:** using language and sounds in special ways to express ideas. ### Subgenres: A smaller group or category #### Drama: - **Comedy:** Happy ending. - **Tragedy:** Sad ending. #### Fiction: - **(FA, FO, HI, MY, RE, RO, SCI, THRI)** - **Fantasy:** Story in a fantasy world. - **Folklore:** Old cultural stories. - **Historical Fiction:** Story about crime/real history. - **Mystery:** Seems real but isn't real. - **Realistic Fiction:** Love story/romance. - **Science Fiction:** Story in the future with technology that makes readers nervous or excited. - **Thriller or Suspense:** ### Non-Fiction - **Biography:** A person's life written by another person. - **Autobiography:** Story the author writes about himself. - **Narrative Non-Fiction:** Happened in real life. - **Periodicals:** Magazines, newspapers, and journals that are written regularly. - **Reference Materials:** Books with facts and in alphabetical order. ### Poetry: - **Lyric:** About the speaker's thoughts. - **Narrative:** Poem that tells a story. - **Epic:** Long poem about a hero. - **Dramatic:** Words spoken by a character. * ex: soliloquy, dialogue, and monologue. ## Communication - Used for communication in personal, academic, and professional settings. ## Practical Writing - Focuses on factual events and real people. - Also includes practical writing and persuasive writing - Also known as functional writing. - Intended to convey information clearly and efficiently. - Commonly used in everyday situations and professional contexts. ## Elements of CNF (Ferpe): - **Fact:** Writing must be made up. Cannot be made up. - **Extensive Research:** Based on primary and secondary research. - Primary: Interview, personal experience. - Secondary: Books, magazines, newspapers. - **Reportage/Reporting:** Personal experience and personal opinion. Must be able to document events. ## Essay Format - **Personal Feelings, Experience, Thought:** Required to explain the personal experience and to "pic" [likely "pick"] the reader. - **Creative Non-Fiction:** Is often written by this format. - **Other Examples of On:** [Likely the first word was "Note"]: Memoirs, personal essays, travel writing/blogs, literary journalism. ## Goal of Practical Writing: - To be clear, concise and useful to the reader. - Often prioritizing straightforwardness over artistic expression. ## Documents That Present Information - Detailed documents that present information. - A guide that explains how to use a product. - Brief communications used within an organization. - Resumes and cover letters.
