# Water Uptake by Roots The cell membrane as well as the tonoplast (membrane surrounding the vacuole) are selectively permeable. ## Water Movement Water enters the root hairs by osmosis. Water moves by osmosis from a region of high water potential (Ψ) in the soil to a region of low water potential (Ψ) in the root hair vacuole. ## Water Uptake Process - The influx of water molecules causes the water potential of the cell sap to increase. - This increase in water potential causes turgor pressure. The image shows water moving from an area of high water potential in the soil to an area of low water potential in the root hair. This movement is driven by osmosis. The red arrows indicate the direction of water movement. The root hair is labeled, as well as the soil water and soil particles.
