Bias means having opinions that affect how you think and act, either in a negative or positive way. When an author has their own opinions that show up in their writing and they can't be totally fair about a topic, that's what we mean by their bias. When the writer really likes something they're writing about. When the writer's feelings or emotions get in the way of being fair about what they're writing. When the author uses strong, mean words, like racial insults. 2. When the author often says things that make one group of people look better (or worse) than others. 3. When the author only talks about one side of a story or issue, ignoring facts that might make the other side look good. 4. The author makes up, lies about, or uses false information to make their point look better. The writer really wants to believe what they're saying. The writer's past experiences affect how they think. The writer is trying hard to convince the reader. To read well, you need to see when writers are unfair. If you don't, you might believe what the writer says even if it's not true. To find bias in a text, read it and ask, "What does the writer want me to believe or do?" Bias is often in things like opinions, ads, religious writings, and political opinions.
