Chapter 8 Recreation, Attraction, & Gaming Entertainment After today’s class, you should be able to: Discuss the relationship of recreation and leisure Distinguish between commercial and noncommercial recreation Name & describe various types of recreational activities and choices. Understand Integrated Resorts in gaming industry Recreation vs Leisure The word recreation is defined as the use of time for refreshment of one’s body or mind Recreation allows people to have fun together and form lasting relationships built on the experiences they have enjoyed together Leisure is best described as time free from work Benefits of recreation 1. Recreation activities can be therapeutic in nature, for example: healing someone’s mind and body 2. It also allows people to have fun together with friends and family to form bonding/relationships 3. A place for people who have common interest to socialize and interact Leisure & Recreational Demand Leisure & recreational demand is generally equated with participation or a desire to engage in leisure, recreational and tourism activities. It is also affected by the supply of resources, facilities and opportunities which enable such demand to be fulfilled. Leisure is the time which an individual has free from work or other duties and which may be utilised for the purposes of relaxation, diversion, social achievement, or personal development The factors motivating both tourist and leisure activities and many of the needs, such as relaxation, being with friends and others. Recreation Tourist Destination Casino Museums, Zoo, Historical Monuments Government-sponsored recreation The government raises revenues from income taxes, sales taxes, property tax and special revenue from recreation related activities such as vehicles, boats, motor fuels and etc-use taxes to support the operation of the parks: National parks – Taman Negara, Malaysia State parks – Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA Public recreation parks – Bukit Jalil Recreational Park, Kuala Lumpur Some national parks are free for visitors but some are collecting National Parks Conservation Fee in order to manage the parks National Taman Negara, Malaysia Rockies Mountain National Park, Canada Parks Serengeti National Park, Tanzania Jiu Zhai Gou National Park, China Public Recreation Parks Titiwangsa Lake Recreational Park, KL Ueno Park, Tokyo New York Central Park Commercial recreation Is a medium for the provision of recreation products and services. Since commercial recreation is based primarily on the customer paying a fee, commercial enterprises are able to focus on specific target markets that will allow for long-term profitability. Eg : Theme park Some parks and attractions focus on a single theme; others focus on multiple themes There are an abundance of theme parks located throughout the world eg : Disneyland, Universal Studio, Warners Bros Regional theme park – Serving a smaller geographic area than parks such as Disney, often target particular groups. For example, Sunway Lagoon , Lost World of Tambun I. Theme Park Offers a wide range of recreational, fun & exciting activities, games, shows and events Cater to all: children, adults, families Most parks carry a strong central theme Mainly located at outskirts of urban areas Is sometimes a destination itself – hotels, restaurants & other tourism facilities are built around the theme park Disney Sea , Tokyo Universal Studio, Orlando Movie World, Gold Coast Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates II. Club Private clubs are places where members only gather for social, recreational, professional, or fraternal reasons. Like second home, but with diverse facilities and staff to accommodate the occasion. Clubs are designed around a housing development where the neighbourhood utilize the services of the club (golf, tennis, pool) Members pay an initiation fee and annual dues Club management is similar to hotel management: managers, forecasting, budgeting, planning, food and beverage facility management and maintenance. 17 Type of Clubs Business oriented Sport clubs Dining clubs Yachting clubs Residential clubs House Community club III. Retail Definition: Retail is the sale of goods to end users, not for resale, but for use and consumption by the purchaser. Retail industry: a sector of the economy that is comprised of individuals and companies engaged in the selling of finished products to end user consumers. Retailers: Businessmen who sell goods or commodities in small quantities directly to consumers. 19 Two Types of Retailers Store Retailers – Those engaged in the sale of products from physical locations with the intent of attracting customers to make purchases on site. Non-Store Retailers – Those engaged in the sale of products using marketing methods which do not include a physical location. Eg : Shopee, Lazada, Amazon, Taobao 20 Types of Retail Shops Mini market Supermarket / Hypermarket Departmental – Mark & Spenser, Parkson Specialty shops – Ikea for Furniture, Body Shop Independent / Sole Traders Chain stores – 7-11, Watson Service shops – Travel agencies, Repairing Services 21 Retails as tourism products Mega Malls – a place where a collection of shops all adjoin a pedestrian area, cater for luxury , fashion & lifestyle shopping experience Night Markets - street markets which operate at night and are generally dedicated to more leisurely strolling, shopping, and food and beverage than more business like day markets. They are typically open-air markets. Bazaars- A type of market found especially in Middle Eastern countries that has rows of small shops which sell many different products such as souvenirs, art & craft, foods, spices & herbs for local or tourists Retails as tourism products Farmer Market - retail market featuring foods sold directly by farmers to consumers. Farmers' markets typically consist of booths, tables or stands, outdoors or indoors, where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, meats, and sometimes prepared foods and beverages Flea Market - is a type of market that rents space to people who want to sell used goods, such as antiques, vintage cloths, books are commonly sold Art & Craft Market – local artists’ selling their art and craft products, a creative platform to showcase their talent and creations Floating Market, Bangkok Grand Bazaar, Istanbul Night Market , Taipei Christmas Market, Brussel Iv. Wellness & Fitness center Spa Beauty Salon Fitness Center Massage therapy center Tourist Destination Destinations are places where tourism has developed spontaneously or has been actively encouraged. Destinations are places of interests to tourists The target of a holiday, where tourists stay and engage in different activities, it is also core component of a holiday 2024 According to the Schengen Visa Information website, Malaysians will need to apply for the ETIAS or European Travel Information and Authorisation System. “ETIAS for : Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. “Malaysians will also need an ETIAS to visit the following European microstates with open borders: Monaco (via France), San Marino (via Italy) and Vatican City (via Italy),” according to the website. A festival is an ordinarily celebrated by a community and centring on some characteristic aspect of that community and its religion or traditions, often marked as a local or national holiday. Events can be classified on the basis of their size, type and context.
