Input to a computer is usually given by clicking the mouse or by typing on the keyboard. Output devices allow us to receive information from the computer. Output may be printouts from the printer, sounds on the speaker, or images on the monitor Central Processing Unit (CPU) CPU controls all the input and output devices connected to it. A device has to be connected to the CPU to send or receive information. The CPU is neither an input nor an output device. It takes the information given by the input devices, does the work and sends the result to the output devices. Start up Start up Computer is a machine which runs on electricity.  Parts of a computer like CPU, Monitor, Mouse and Keyboard require electricity. To start a computer,  Switch on the power supply and then press the ‘Power’ button on the CPU. The light indicates that the computer is switched on.  There is nothing on the screen as the monitor is off. Booting or Start Up is the sequence of actions done by the computer while starting. It is getting everything ready for your use. Activities using a Mouse Desktop has activity icons and folder icons. The icons can be rearranged by using the drag and drop action of the mouse. New folders can be created and moved to different locations on the desktop. Folders are used to organize files on a computer. Folders help in keeping related files together, to allow us to find them easily. Files can be moved into folders by using Drag and Drop. Activities using keyboard o Caps Lock is used to type the letters of the alphabet in upper case. o Backspace is used to delete a letter before the cursor position. o Delete is used to delete the letter to the right of the cursor position. o The four directional arrow keys, page up and page down keys are used to move the cursor around in the text file Authentication – Login and Logout Who do you do when a computer is shared by more than one person? You can manage user accounts by given a username and password to access it. Windows allows adding multiple user account to use the same device, enabling each user to have their own settings, documents, and applications. having separate user accounts can help maintain a clear boundary between personal files and activities and those related to work or school. Authentication – Login and Logout How to add a user account? 1. In the Settings app on your Windows device, select Accounts > Family & 0ther user 2. Under, Add other user select Add account 3. Enter the account information for this person to sign in: a) If the person you're adding already has a Microsoft account, enter the email address b) If the person you're adding doesn't have a Microsoft account, you can use their email address to create one. Enter the email address that person uses most frequently and select Sign up for a new email address c) If you select the option I don't have this person's sign-in information , you can sign up for a new email address and create a new Microsoft account. If you want to create a local account, select the option Add a user without a Microsoft account 4. Follow the instructions to finish setting up the account Recommends using a Microsoft account, not a local account, when signing in to Windows for seamless integration of Microsoft services, enhanced security, and sync across devices, unlike a local account. Authentication – Login and Logout How to remove a user account? 1. In the Settings app on your Windows device, select Accounts > Family & other use 2. Under Other users, select the flyout for the account you want to remove 3. Next to Account and data , select Remove Authentication – Login and Logout The username is also called login. Each username has a secret key which is called password. The username and password ensures that only those who have permission can use the computer. When both the username and password are typed correctly, you can login. Logout is the action of closing your access to the computer. Shut down Shut down Shut down is the action of closing all the activities and stopping the computer. To Shut down a computer  Click Start button, select the Power button, and then select Shut down. The power supply to the computer should be switched off only after shutting down the computer. Shut down Shut down Things You Should Know: Press "Alt + F4" → "Shut down" → "OK". Press "Ctrl + Alt + Del" → Power button → "Shut down". Press the "Windows key + X" → "Shut down or sign out" → "Shut down". Text Editing A text editor is a software application that creates and edits plain text files.  In addition to simply typing text directly, they can cut, copy, and paste text from other sources and quickly find and replace text within a file.  Text editors lack the text formatting features of word processors, which use rich text files instead. Plain Text Notepad On the Windows operating systems, Notepad is a very simple text-editing tool that lets you create, open, and read plaintext files with a.txt file extension. How to open Notepad? 1. Press the Windows key. 2. Type notepad in the search field. 3. Click the Notepad program in the search results. Components of Notepad The components of notepad are: Title Bar Status Bar Menu Bar Text Area Components of Notepad 1 Title Bar 2 Status Bar The title bar is the topmost bar in the Notepad Status bar shows the column number and current window. line below the text area It contains the name of the text file and program name. Format Tab: The options under format tab include word wrap and fonts for typing. How to Create a Text File Using Notepad? The processes to create a text file using notepad have been discussed below: 1. Open the notepad in your computer and type the text you want to save in the file. 2. After completion, go the File option & click on it. 3. Then select the Save option or Save as option & make sure that the file has been saved with a “.txt” extension. Notepad How do you print a Notepad document? 1. In Notepad, open the document you want to print. 2. In the file menu, click File, and select Print. 3.
