**TVE -- ICF (Internet and Computing Fundamentals) Activity Sheet** **Quarter 2 -- LO.6** **IDENTIFY THE TYPES AND PURPOSES OF SOFTWARE.** **What is a Software?** **[Software]** is the collection of programs that are stored and run on computer hardware, and help users to work on the computer. **Software is of two types: [System software] and [Application software].** A. **[System software]** is defined as a collection of programs that controls the overall operations and internal working of a computer system. **System Software is of three main types:** **[a. Operating System]** **[b. Language Processor]** **[c. Utility Software]** a. **[Operating System]** is needed to operate a computer. An operating system controls the overall activities of a computer. **Here is a list of examples of an operating system.** +-----------------------------------+-----------------------------------+ | **For desktop computers, laptops | **For smartphones:** | | and tablets:** | | | | Apple's iOS | | Microsoft Windows | | | | Google's Android | | Mac (for Apple devices) | | | | Windows Phone OS | | Linux | | +-----------------------------------+-----------------------------------+ b. **[Language Processor-]** Each software is created by writing programs is computer languages.. Here, a **[language processor]** plays a vital role in translating the programming language into machine language. c. **[Utility Software-]** Utility programs perform specific tasks usually related to managing a computer, its devices or its programs. These programs assist in the smooth functioning of the computer system and help it to perform better. **Example of Utility Softwares** - Anti-virus Utility -- Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, etc. - Compression -- Zip, Winzip, bzip2, Winrar, etc B. **[Application Software-]** These are sets of programs, developed by programmers in order to perform specific types of jobs, like doing calculations, arranging data in an organize manner, designing professional documents, creating images and logos, etc. **The application software can be further divided into two categories:** i. **[General Purpose Application Software-]** can perform many tasks to fulfill the general needs of people. ii. **[Special Purpose Application Software-]** Software which designed to meet the specific needs of any user are called Specific Purpose Application Software. Example: Reservation system, Billing system, Payroll System, etc. **Some examples of General Purpose Application software are:** - **[Word processing software] --** helps us to create professional looking documents quickly and efficiently. - **[Electronic Spreadsheet]** -- helps you to perform calculations and display the data in the form of a chart to analyse in a better way. - **[Presentation Software]** -- It is used to present an idea or concept in a lively manner. - **[Desktop Publishing Software]** -- This application helps you to combine both text and graphic features to design professional documents, like newsletters, printed form, advertisements, books, brochures, posters, magazines, etc. - **[Graphics Softwares]** -is used to create images, such as charts, graphs, photographs, logos, cartoons and much more. - **[Multimedia Software]** -is used to create video, animation, sounds, graphics, and text with high degree of interaction.
