# The Origin of Administrative Value and Accountability ## Introduction Have you ever been to a situation where you have to make a life-changing decision? How did that decision end up? Is it what you expected, or the exact opposite happened? The word *administrative* signifies *administrator* which means a man needs to do something, to administer. To "administer" is to manage or oversee execution of decisions to ensure that a goal is achievable. People administer a particular job because there is a need and there are roots. There is someone who delegated a particular job. # The Historical Evolution of Administrative Ethics Administrative Ethics comes from a long time of building the society. We can trace its origin to the ancient civilizations, communities, and great thinkers and philosophers. It contributed to what we considered morally correct, upright, and just and what we believe are wrong and evil. It guided us and the way it influences the government we have today. ## Ancient Civilizations In ancient civilizations like China and Greece, administrative ethics is based on the idea of leading life acting justly and morally. Philosophers like Confucius and Plato insisted that leaders should possess qualities like fairness and righteousness, promoting and acting in the best interests of the people. ## Medieval Era Religious teachings heavily influenced ethics during this time. For example in Europe, Christian Church played an important role in shaping the idea of how life should be lived and how rulers should follow the moral principles of Christianity, such as honesty and service to attain common good. ## Modern Era (17th to 19th Century) Max Weber emphasized the need for professionalism that public servants should act transparently to the public and cater to the needs of the people. Access to information, administration, and audits were one of the mechanisms developed to ensure accountability among officials, creating a framework for modern public administration. ## 20th Century New ideas about how to treat people equally came after the World War 2. Administrations around the world began to give importance to fairness and honesty to do what's best for their people and created clearer rules that ensures ethical behavior in the government. ## Contemporary World Today, Administrative ethics focuses on transparency, accountability, and ethical politics. Leaders are expected to adhere to principles like, non-biased, fair, and upright. Corruption and public trust are among the issues that politicians and the mass are trying to prevent and protect, respectively. We see how administrative ethics has evolved over time, reflecting the changing societal values, highlighting the need for ethical governance as the world becomes more complex. # Definition and Importance of Accountability In the business world, accounting subject is crucial because it defines the overage, shortages, and break-even point of business operation. From the word *account* connotes the title of certain groups of expenses or income that is being accounted based on the inflows and the outflows. The first word in *accountability* is *account* which means counted, our actions are counted whether it is for merits or demerits. Accountability is a fact or condition of being accountable. ## What Does Accountability Mean? Accountability is the practice of being held to a certain standard of excellence. It is the idea that an individual is responsible for their actions and, if that individual chooses unfavorable actions, they will face consequences. Accountability strives to promote a high level of work, promote honesty, encourage dependability, and garner trust from members around you. ## What is an Example of Accountability? A company can contribute a sense of accountability by setting expectations with employees, delegating tasks to different members of a team, and explaining the consequences if the tasks are completed incorrectly or late. ## How is Accountability Defined in the Workplace? To management coaches, accountability in the workplace goes beyond giving each employee a task to complete in a project. It also means making each individual accountable for the success or failure of their contribution to the overall project. In other words, it's all about the ownership of success or failure. ## What is The Difference Between Accountability and Responsibility? A responsibility is an assigned (or self-assigned) task or project. Accountability implies a willingness to be judged on the performance of the project. Accountability doesn't exist in a vacuum. It requires transparency and effective communication of results with all parties that may be affected. # The Bottom Line Accountability can be a management buzzword, or it can be a real framework for evaluating the success or failure of an individual or an entity. The concept of corporate accountability has always meant honest and transparent financial reporting.
