UNIT 1 HISTORY OF HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY Module 1 Development of Hospitality Industry LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the module the learner are expected to : ► Identify the different development and innovations of hotel through each period. ► Evaluate the differences of each period from early ,middle ,sixteenth to eighteenth and modern time ► Compare the period with the most number of development in the Hospitality history ► Assess the growth of Hospitality Industry The History of the Hospitality Industry ► The Hotel industry should not be regarded as standing and separate and unrelated to other industries ,but rather a forming a part of the much larger hospitality Industry.The Hospitality Industry is a fascinating ,fun and stimulating one in which to enjoy a career ,plus you get compensated quite well and have excellent advancement opportunities.It is within the framework that the hotel development should be examined. The History of the Hospitality Industry ► EARLY HISTORY ► THE MIDDLE AGES ► THE SIXTEENTH TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURIES ► GROWTH OF HOTELS IN THE U.S.A ► THE MODERN PERIOD EARLY HISTORY ► CLASSIC GREEK AND ROMAN DAYS In Ancient Greece: ► Hospitality was provided by certain elements of religion: missionaries, priest and pilgrims ► Operated by Slaves- Freemen In Ancient Rome: ► Early travellers: military, diplomatic, or political mission ► Large Mansion- guest allow to stay unless they carried a “letter of Eviction” In Ancient Persia: ► Travellers: was done in large caravans ► Khans- simple structure consisting of four walls. Later Part Roman Empire: ► Traveller are: merchants, actors and scholars ► Marco Polo describe posthouses known: ► Yams- posthouses as a apartment suitable for a king THE MIDDLE AGES ► During the Middle Ages, it was considered the duty of Christians to offer hospitality to travellers and pilgrims. ► Xenodocheions- Greek word meaning inns or resting places ► Charlemagne, he enacted laws setting out the duty of Christians to provide a free resting place for a traveller. ► The law limited only one place to three nights. ► 1282 in Florence, Italy, hospitality turn into business ► 86 inn in Florence were members of the guild. THE SIXTEENTH TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURIES ► Stage coach- common mode of transportation - It was put into effect around 1650 - Inns or Tavern- suitable location along stagecoach. It also became a popular meeting place for local nobility, politicians, priest and others. - Licenses are issued - built with standard design ► 18th century coffee houses became extremely popular in Europe Hotel de Henri IV- first European Hotels it was built in Nandes in 1788 considered the finest in Europe. GROWTH OF HOTELS IN THE U.S.A ► City Hotel first hotel in USA opened in 1794 in New York City with 70 rooms ► Boston Tremont House- First- first class hotel with 170 rooms , indoor toilet and private room with lock on the door.it has a vesion of bellhops or “ROTUNDA MAN” ► SPA AND RESORT- became a tourist spot ► They believe medicinal or healthful. ► Saratoga springs- the most famous spa in New York. ► Tomas Cook – considered the first travel agent ► It was a one day train excursion. The Twentieth Century/ Modern Hotel ► New concept in Hotel design have been develop: ► -innovative architecture ► -Roof High atrium ► - outside scenic elevator etc. ► Known in Hospitality Industry ► Ellsworth Milton Statler opened his first hotel in Buffalo with individual rooms with private baths. The Legendary in the hospitality industry ► Conrad Hilton- King of the Innkeeper. Hilton is seen in almost every major city. ► John Willard Marriott Sr- Founder of Marriot Hotel Chain. ► Kemmon Wilson – founder of Holiday Inns.
