HISTORICAL FOUNDATION OF EDUCATION CHAPTER 2 EDUCATION/SCHOOL Education or school is an institution created by society. Society seeks to preserve itself and to do this it maintains it's functions and institutions, one of which is education, to assure it's survival, stability and convenience. EDUCATION/SCHOOL It is the school that "introduces and trains each child of society into membership within such a little community, saturating him with the spirit of service, and providing him with the instruments of effective selfdirection..." -John Dewey SOCIALIZATION It is the "process of learning the roles, statuses and values necessary for participation in school institutions." - Brinkerhoff, D., 1989 ANTICIPATORY SOCIALIZATION It is a role learning that prepare us for future roles. EDUCATION IN PRIMITIVE SOCIETY Brinkerhoof (1989) explains further: To survive, human beings needed food, shelter, warmth and clothing. To transform a hostile environment into one that is life-sustaining, humankind developed life skills that eventually became cultural patterns. These life skills included: 1.Tool or instrument making 2.Adhererence to the moral behavior code of group of life 3.Language THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL AND SOCIETY WHAT IS SCHOOL? The word ‘school’ is normally associated to buildings, students, curriculum and instruction, teachers and administration. School is a special institution, created to serve specific social needs. WHAT IS SOCIETY? Society refers to a group of persons who share a culture, government, institutions, land, or a set of social relationships. A person can belong to several societies at a time. Religious, professional, and social. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL AND SOCIETY Schools shape children’s perceptions of the world, the values, beliefs, and norms of society are internalized within children so that they come to think and act like other members of the society. Schools helps in building a nation. A good society is the product of a good school system and a good school system is the product of a good society. SCHOOL IS THE REPRESENTATIVE OF SOCIETY School are special institution which strives for the fulfillment of the desires of society School determines its destination in the light of social objectives. School is nothing but a reflection of the needs of society. School cannot decide its objectives by itself.For the realization of the objectives of education, the educational institutions are established in the society. EFFECTS OF SCHOOL ON SOCIETY Schools have a deep impact on the society. Parent’s school choice decisions are influenced by the groups or organizations to which they belong. Argues that parent’s decisions not only influence student’s academic performance but also effect students future. EFFECTS OF COMMUNITY ON SCHOOL An effective method of promoting education and ensuring school support is involving the community in school activities. By inviting community members to join in school festivities, the school administration can improve effectiveness of the education and raise the likelihood that the school will continue to be supported by the community.
