All working must be clearly shown. 1. (a) A particle is acted upon by three forces as shown in Figure 1. If the particle remains at rest, determine the values of P and S. (4) -1 (b) A particle of mass 5 kg, moving with a velocity, 𝑢 = (2𝒊 − 7𝒋) m s is acted upon by two forces, 𝑓1 = (2𝒊 + 3𝒋 − 2𝒌) N and 𝑓2 = (−5𝒊 + 8𝒋 − 2𝒌) N. (i) Determine the acceleration of the particle. (3) (ii) Find the velocity of the particle after 3 s. (3) 2. A body A, of mass 2 kg, is moving with velocity (-2i + 4j) m s-1 when it collides with a body B, of mass 3 kg, moving with a velocity (3i + 4j) m s-1. During the collision the two bodies coalesce. Determine; a) Find the velocity of the combined body immediately after the collision. (4) b) Determine the loss in k.e. as a result of the collision. (5) c) Account for the lost energy in (b) above.
