University of Science and Technology Bannu Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Lesson 1 November 14, 2023 DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE HCI Fundamentals Importance of HCI Learning Objectives Evolution of HCI HCI under cognitive psychology Articulate Human Processor Model DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE Welcome to HCI Course, Day 1! HCI Fundamentals DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE Why Study HCI? Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a multidisciplinary subject that focuses on computer design and user experience. It brings together expertise from computer science, cognitive psychology, behavioural science, and design to understand and facilitate better interactions between users and machines. Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) is essential because: 1. It focuses on designing technology that is user-friendly, efficient, and accessible, ensuring that humans can interact with computers effectively and intuitively. 2. HCI addresses usability and enhances user experience by studying how people engage with digital tools, leading to designs that accommodate human behavior and needs. 3. For instance, a well-designed smartphone interface with clear icons, easy navigation, and responsive touch controls makes it simple for users to access apps, communicate, and manage tasks, demonstrating how HCI improves our daily interactions with technology. DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE HCI Introduction “Human Computer Interaction is a discipline concerned with the design , evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use.” “Card et al 2009” GUI Web Browser Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE HCI Introduction There are three ‘use’ words that must all be true for a product to be successful; it must be: useful – accomplish what is required: Can Charge a device, cook dinner, format a document; usable – do it easily and naturally, without danger of error, etc.; used – make people want to use it, be attractive, engaging, fun, etc. DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE Component of HCI As its name implies, HCI is made of four components: the user, the task , interface (ways they work together) and Context User: The user, is, after all, the one whom computer systems are designed to assist ◦ The requirements of the user should therefore be our first priority. Task: refers to action or series of actions a user undertakes to achieve a desired outcome within an interactive system. Interface: The point of contact and communication between a human user and computer system Context: refers to the environment of within which an interaction between a user and a computer system takes place DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE The Goals of HCI The goals of HCI are to produce usable and safe systems, as well as functional systems. In order o produce computer systems with good usability, developers must attempt to: ❖Understand the factors that determine how people use technology ❖Develop tools and techniques to enable building suitable systems ❖Achieve efficient, effective, and safe interaction ❖Put people first DR WHAB KHAN HCI COURSE HCI Lesson # 1 HCI Introduction Evolution of HCI HCI Under Cognitive Psychology Human Processor Model Introduction History Component Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, Goals consectetur adipiscing elit. consectetur adipiscing elit. Evolution of HCI (History) 1. 1970s- The rise of the Personal Computer. cognitive science, which incorporated cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, cognitive anthropology, and the philosophy of mind 2. 1980s- Graphical User Interface (GUI). Graphical User Interface (GUI) is the interface that is designed for the easier understanding of the users of the computers. Before GUI, there was a command prompt by which command was given to the computers. GUI started the graphical interface which is easy to use, understand, visualize, and it improved the working environment. 3. 1990s- The Internet and Collaborative works. The Internet started journey in 1990s. So, communications among people became easier. In the consequence of this, many new technologies arrived for better communication. 4. 2000s- Mobile Computing and Beyond. Mobile phones, PDA (Personal Development Assistance), and Smart Phones are ruling the present world. They offer a wide range of services to the people such as sms, mms, multimedia, games, email, internet, chatting, video conference, GPS etc. Now a days the HCI is used in the area of Cognitive Science. With the help of the Internet, medical facilities can be provided remotely. Different interactive interfaces are designed those can be used for the cognitive rehabilitations.
