The primordial concern of adolescence is to rise above the identity–role confusion crises that may continue to happen through early, middle, and even late adulthood. Confusion crisis must be addressed at an early age One step toward achieving this is to explore the concept of self and know the self-better How One Gets to Know Oneself (Contributing Factors) 1. Understanding Personality Personality is consists of the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual makeupthat set the difference from one to another. One must have a perception and database of information regarding these attributes. Consistency is one’s pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behavior that determines the personality to a certain extent. Check into habits that make one distinct from other persons. According to Sigmund Freud (known as the Father of Psychoanalysis or Talk Therapy), personality is developed throughout childhood There are three parts of human nature: a. ID (Unconscious) Pleasure Principle satisfaction of needs immediate gratification Libido is the driving force behind it b. EGO (Conscious) Reality Principle Mediator between ID and the Superego c. SUPEREGO (Mostly Unconscious) Moral Principle Right and Wrong Rules, Moral Norms 2. Appreciating values Values pertain to the moral codes, a norm of conduct, and ethical principles a person adheres to It serves as a guide to everyday life, empowering the individual not to compromise the most important things. Examples of these are integrity, honesty, loyalty, industry, excellence, and professionalism. Whatever one believes in prompts a person to act consistently with one’s values and beliefs. 3. Knowing the body and physical attributes The physical body is tangible proof of a person’s existence Through it, one can feel sensations such as pain, pleasure, warmth, and fatigue. It gives the persona awareness of their breathing, movements, abilities, balance, and flexibility Physical attributes can be different due to genetics, age, lifestyle, ailments, or even personal enhancements - example: transition from childhood onwards 4. Recognizing dreams and aspirations Dreams and aspirations serve as a roadmap to the future They pave the way for a life worth living It constitutes a person’s goals and ambitions in life They mirror a part of that person and the type of individual they desire to become someday These goals should be worked on daily 5. Identifying likes and dislikes These define what brings satisfaction and dissatisfaction to a person Identifying one’s likes and dislikes enables a person to represent the personality and boost individual confidence Doing things that are opposed may only bring frustration; doing things that are liked may get gratification The ability to determine one’s likes and dislikes spells the foundation in the pursuit of personal goals in life 6. Embracing the past Know and treasure your past A big part of the knowledge about oneself constitutes the past The experiences one encounters teach lessons in life and can draw inspiration from it to continue with their life 7. Understanding Self-Perception and Others’ Perceptions Knowledge of the self is a product of one’s perception, others’ perception which is a product of our interaction with others.
