Recognize the importance of the population (epidemiological) perspective in assessing disease frequency, in establishing the cause of disease and in assessing the benefits of treatment 2. Describe how to set about doing a study in which the extent of a health problem is to be measured. 3. Describe how infectious diseases can spread. 4. Identify key elements in controlling infection in our hospitals. Problem A: Q/ You are a doctor at the primary health care center in Kirkuk city. You received an 8-year-old child complaining of painless, watery diarrhea. His mother stated that her child was feeling sleepy and tired, and that many of his colleagues told the same story. Upon examination, it was found that the child suffers from drowsiness, thirst, and sunken eyes, which indicates that he suffers from moderate to severe dehydration. 1. What is your approach to manage the child’s condition? 2. Many children came to consult you for the same problem, and this provokes your thinking on different levels. Explain that? 3. A team of primary health care doctors conducts a survey to study the extent of the problem in the region. What are the steps for conducting the survey? 4. What actions should be taken next to manage the problem at this level? Problem B: Q/ A 7-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with a runny nose, fever, and generalized rash. The patient is lethargic and has not eaten since yesterday morning due to nausea. 1. What symptoms does this patient have that increase the risk of transmitting the infection to others 2. What personal protective equipment (PPE) will you wear while providing care to this patient? 3. What should you teach the patient and his family to limit and control infection in this child and protect other children in the family?
