ILOs: I. Determine the characteristics, indications, contraindications and manipulation techniques of glass ionomer restorative material. outline Conventional glass ionomer GIC: 1. Definition. 2. Composition. 3. Setting reaction. 4. Properties, advantages and disadvantages. A water based material which is formed as a product of an acid-base reaction between the basic calcium-fluoro-aluomino-silicate glass powder and an aqueous solution of polyacid. The set cement is thus formed of un- reacted glass particles surrounded by silica hydrogel dispersed in an amorphous matrix of hydrated Ca and Al polysalts. This results in: 1. Decrease strength & Weakened restoration 2. Loss of translucency & Increased opacity (poor esthetics and liability to staining) 3. Leakage. Thank You
