Our targets I can Explain what happens when volcanoes erupt I can Illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human use I can describe geothermal energy I can explain why geothermal energy is powerful and renewable I can describe the great potential of our country towards geothermal energy I can describe how a volcanic eruption could alter the climate. How do you know when someone is extremely angry? How do you positively handle your anger? Why is there a need to control one’s temper? How do you approach an angry individual in a constructive manner? *What signals indicate an impending volcanic eruption? *What causes a volcano to erupt? Volcanoes erupt because of the continuous pressure happening in the mantle that is making the molten material (magma) in the chamber to be pushed up to the volcano then coming out through an eruption from the volcano’s crater. When a volcano erupt there will be: 1. Lahar or lava flow 2. Fires 3. Loss of property 4. Casualties 5. Water and air pollution 6. Disturbance in weather/climate patterns How do scientists monitor and predict volcanic activity to mitigate risks? (Cities’ program on “Disaster Risk Reduction”) *What benefit/s do we get from volcanoes? *Although people who live close to volcanoes typically view them as a threat, we cannot discount the immense force they possess. On the other hand, how can we effectively make use of such immense power for our benefit? Is it possible in the Philippines? *How does geothermal energy work? *Why is geothermal energy both powerful and renewable? *Why is geothermal energy so underutilized globally? Powerplant in Batangas Powerplant in Leyte We have learned how volcanoes erupt; it’s advantage and disadvantages But the remaining question yet to be answered is, how can materials spewing out from a volcanic eruption reacts or influence the atmospheric condition? Find out the answer to this question by accomplishing, Activity: Change by Eruption *Why did the 1815 eruption of Mt. Tambora cause such a global sensation? What were the volcanic eruption's worldwide effects? *The eruption of Mount Tambora resulted in a year without a summer. Clearly explain what you understand by that? *Even if you are far from the volcanic location, is it still necessary to prepare for volcanoes? (Disaster Risk Reduction)
