UNIT 1 WORLD CONTINENTS lesson 1 – P. 12 The American Continent - North America Who were the first inhabitants of the American continent and how did they come to settle there? Several historians trace the discovery of the American continent to a time before the arrival of Christopher Columbus, a European explorer who set out to discover the land of America. When he arrived there, he didn’t know he was in America and thought it was the East Indies so he named the inhabitants Indians. The Native Americans (American Indians) were the first inhabitants of the continent; they belonged to many tribes (the Caribs, the Mayans, and the Incas) and spoke different languages. The ancestors of these people migrated from different areas such as Siberia and Alaska and settled there. What were the impacts of European arrival on Native Americans and why did Europeans come to America? With the arrival of the Europeans on the continent, many Native Americans were injured or killed by the new diseases carried by the Europeans. Several battles took place between the two parties that also led to the defeat of the natives and the colonization of the continent by the Europeans. In addition, the natives who were able to survive the diseases and battles were taken as slaves, driven off their lands, and forced to change their lifestyle. Europeans came to America for different reasons: some sought to become rich, while others wanted to expand their lands. They brought new species of plants and animals, tools, guns, and cloth. The continent of America is made up of two separate continents: North America and South America. What are the key geographical and political features of the American continent? NORTH AMERICA North America is the third largest continent in the world. It is located in the Northern Hemisphere and covers about 16.5% of the Earth’s surface. The continent has a variety of plant and animal species as well as diverse climates ranging from very cold to mild and hot. The main countries of North America are the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico. Greenland is also located on the North American continent; however, politically, it is an island belonging to the European country of Denmark. The North American continent also consists of two main regions: Central America and the Caribbean …etc What are the key geographical, demographic, and economic features of the United States? The United States of America – The U.S.A. The United States ranks fourth in the world in terms of size. Washington is its capital, and the country has 50 separate states. Alaska, located in the northwestern extremity of North America, was the 49th state to join and Hawaii was the 50th. The people of this country come from many different backgrounds: Asian Americans (from Asian countries), African Americans (from African countries), and Hispanic Americans - from Latin America (Central and South American countries, Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico), speak Spanish, and are often called Latinos. This country is a major economic influence in the world. It mainly depends on the service sector that includes healthcare, education, finance, and tourism. It has a great manufacturing base as well such as airplanes, food, and electronics. It is rich in resources such as minerals and natural gas and has several farmlands that produce a wide variety of crops such as corn, wheat, and soybeans. What are the key factors that contribute to Canada being a major destination for immigrants? Canada is the largest country in North America and the second largest in the world. Its capital is Ottawa, while Toronto is its largest city; both are in the province of Ontario. Canada has ten provinces—districts or divisions within a country, and both English and French are the official languages used. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, an organization of countries associated with Great Britain that had recognized Queen Elizabeth II as its head, who is now succeeded by her son Charles III, and whose aim is to support international peace, give equal rights to their citizens, and remove poverty, ignorance, and disease. It is also a member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (IOF), an international organization of governments that promotes the French language and culture and aims for economic, educational, and political cooperation among its members. Today, Canada is recognized as a country that attracts many immigrants from all over the world. How does Mexico's geographical location and cultural diversity influence its economic and political strength? Mexico is located between the United States of America and Central America. The country is located in the Ring of Fire—a region around the Pacific Ocean that has many active volcanoes and earthquakes. It is the third largest country in Latin America and one of the strongest politically. It also has one of the most important economies. Mexico City is its capital. A large portion of Mexicans are “mestizos”, meaning they have both European and Native American ancestors. About 90% of Mexicans speak Spanish; in fact, the country has the largest Spanish-speaking population in the world. The Mexican society can be very poor or very rich. It is a country with a very rich culture; one of the ancient wonders of the world is in Mexico, Chichén Itzá.
