TERM 1: PERFORMANCE TASK #2 ENGL & SS 10 Exploring the Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status and Academic Strand Selection Among Grade 10 Students at St. Edward School Cue Jasper, Evangelista Cedrick, Fronda Christan, Ilagan Hannah, Lobo Sophia, Perlas Joanne, Reyes Dianna Group 4 | Grade 10 Uganda St. Edward School 2024 October Proposal Text Comments I. Introduction In a world where access to resources provides opportunities for higher education, having a promising potential might not be enough. With the implementation of the senior high school curriculum, Grade 10 students face the critical choice of selecting an academic strand. Studies show that among 88 surveyed respondents, socioeconomic status ranked as the third most influential factor in this decision-making (Malaguial et al., 2023). This relationship highlights the considerable implications for students’ futures, as their chosen strand is closely tied to their intended college major. According to Nazareno et al. (2020), a study revealed that students from higher-income families are more likely to choose Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). In contrast, students from lower-income families often settle for educational paths that require less financial investment. Students’ academic performance and strand selection are dependent on their socioeconomic situation, which influences their success in education and access to basic educational resources such as textbooks, computers, and many more (Aithor, 2024). The researchers aim to explore the relationship between student’s socioeconomic background on their selection of academic strands. By analyzing the patterns of strand selection through the lens of socioeconomic status, thereby contributing to a better understanding of how personal circumstances can shape academic aspirations among Grade 10 students at St. Edward School. Statement of the Problem Many Filipino students are forced to choose an academic strand that is far from what they want due to their socioeconomic status or their inability to afford the necessary materials for their education, such as laptops, textbooks, and tuition (Senator Gatchalian, 2023). Meanwhile, there are seven sections of Grade 10 students in St. Edward School that will answer the survey questionnaire. Thus, this study aims to reach the following objectives: 1. To analyze the student’s socioeconomic status by making a criteria; 2. To investigate how access to digital learning resources can affect a student’s decision regarding academic strands; and 3. To assess the influence of students' socioeconomic status in selecting their academic strand. III. Research Questions: This study entitled “Exploring the Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status and Academic Strand Selection Among Grade 10 Students at St. Edward School” aimed to answer the following questions: 1. What are the socioeconomic status categories of Grade 10 students at St. Edward School? 2. What percentage of students experience struggles in academics due to limited access to learning resources? 3. How does socioeconomic status influence students’ selection of academic strands? IV. Significance of the Study The relevance of this study lies in exploring the relationship between socioeconomic status and the selection of academic strands, which is pivotal to shaping a student’s future academic path and career path. In order to pursue a specific strand, one must take into consideration their economic status. The findings of this study will contribute to the following: To educational policymakers: The results of this study can help educational policymakers guide the development of policies and programs that promote equal access to diverse academic strands regardless of financial background. To school administrators: The results of this study can assist educators in offering better support to students by considering financial challenges during the strand selection process. Schools may be able to create initiatives to provide resources, scholarships, or advice based on the monetary needs of students. TERM 1 S.Y. 2024-2025 Page 2 of 4 TERM 1: PERFORMANCE TASK #2 ENGL & SS 10 To the students: The results of this study can help Grade 10 students identify differences in academic strand selection according to socioeconomic class. This awareness may help them make more informed decisions when planning for both senior high school and potential higher education pursuits. To the parents: The results of this study can help parents support their children in their educational choices and advocate for better access to educational opportunities. To future researchers: The results of this study will serve as a foundation for future research on how socioeconomic disparities affect educational aspirations. Future researchers can further illuminate the structural factors that contribute to inequities in educational pathways and outcomes, thus advancing efforts to mitigate these disparities. V. Scope and Delimitation This quantitative research focuses on the St. Edward School Faith Campus and seeks to assess how socioeconomic status affects the selection of a strand for Senior High School. The respondents in the study will be the current Grade 10 students at SES Faith Campus from seven different sections. Data from the respondents will be gathered using questionnaires. The study focuses exclusively on Grade 10 students, as they are the ones preparing to choose a strand in Senior High School. It does not include data from other grade levels because analyzing the socioeconomic status of other Junior High School students concerning their strand choices is outside the study's scope. Additionally, Senior High School students have already made their strand selections. This research specifically explores the relationship between socioeconomic status and strand choices. While one of the study's objectives is to identify the influence of socioeconomic status to students’ strand selections, it does not primarily focus on other factors such as peer pressure or personal desires.
