Physical Education Physical Activity and Its Health Benefits Central Question Why is physical activity beneficial to our health? As early as now, you should know the health benefits of being physically active so that when you get older, you get to live an active lifestyle. The advantages of participating in physical activity are as follows: PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT MENTAL DEVELOPMENT EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Physical Development The development of locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative movements occurs when children engage in basic activities, sports, or domestic chores. Locomotor Movements Locomotor Movements movements that let the performer move from one place to another Examples: 1 walking 3 hopping 2 running 4 leaping 5 skipping 6 jumping Non- Locomotor Non-Locomotor Movements Movements movements that are done in place and sometimes combined with locomotor movements. Examples: 1 bend 3 raise or lift, 2 flex 4 stretch 5 extend rotate 6 twist Manipulative Movements Manipulative Movements These involve manipulating of objects by using one’s body parts. Examples: 1 catching 3 striking 2 throwing 4 kicking 5 pushing/ pulling 6 dribbling and lifting Mental Development Exercises and sports that include physical activity allow the body to release “happy hormones” that enhance motivation, focus, and mood. Emotional and Social Children can build self- esteem, confidence, Development tenacity, and perseverance through individual activities like athletics, swimming, badminton, tae kwon do, and more. The Perks of Being More Active For Your Children “The Kid’s Activity Pyramid” by Park Nicollet Health Source (2009) suggests that a child can take part in the following types of physical activities. Daily Physical Activities doing household chores doing active transport such as taking the stairs playing with pets being active during recess dancing to music playing active games chasing butterflies, frogs, etc. Free Play flying a kite skateboarding playing jumping rope, piko, tag games, hide-and- seek individual or pair games Group Play team sports like basketball, volleyball, kickball, etc. dance lessons and activities Family Play nature hiking with family swimming exploring indoor and outdoor playgrounds playing frisbee biking QUESTIONS: What are the different activities that you and your family usually do?
